{"id":206336,"date":"2017-10-19T14:21:22","date_gmt":"2017-10-19T12:21:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=206336"},"modified":"2017-10-19T14:21:22","modified_gmt":"2017-10-19T12:21:22","slug":"every-south-africans-private-details-could-be-in-the-leaked-database-sa-fraud-services","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/technology\/206336\/every-south-africans-private-details-could-be-in-the-leaked-database-sa-fraud-services\/","title":{"rendered":"Every South African&#8217;s private details could be in the leaked database: SA fraud services"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Southern African Fraud Prevention Service&#8217;s Manie van Schalkwyk has urged South Africans not to take the recent database leak lightly.<\/p>\n<p>The database was recently <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/security\/233853-massive-south-african-database-leak-just-got-bigger-60-million-records-online.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">revealed <\/a><\/strong>to include over 60 million identity numbers\u00a0 &#8211; more than double the 30 million identities originally thought to have leaked.<\/p>\n<p>Among the sensitive data (amounting to about 27 gigabytes), the information includes identity numbers, personal income, age, employment history, company directorships, race group, marital status, occupation, employer and previous addresses.<\/p>\n<p>Van Schalkwyk said that he was certain that every South African is on this database &#8211; and all citizens should assume that this is the case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI warn consumers against attempting to verify if they are on the database or anybody offering services like that,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou could be leading yourself into further jeopardy by providing somebody else with data with the understanding that you will verify if you are on the leaked dataset.
