{"id":209157,"date":"2017-11-06T13:58:10","date_gmt":"2017-11-06T11:58:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=209157"},"modified":"2017-11-06T15:03:36","modified_gmt":"2017-11-06T13:03:36","slug":"how-much-taxi-drivers-earn-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/motoring\/209157\/how-much-taxi-drivers-earn-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"How much taxi drivers earn in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The department of labour has updated its minimum wages for taxi drivers and other taxi employees.<\/p>\n<p>Taxi drivers can expect an around a 5.7% increase year-on-year, with increases applying retrospectively from the end of October 2017.<\/p>\n<p>The new increases mean that drivers\u2019 minimum wage will increase from:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Monthly<\/strong>: R3,218.57 to\u00a0R3,413.26;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Weekly<\/strong>: R742.80 to R787.73;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hourly<\/strong>: R15.47 to R16.41.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In comparison, rank marshals&#8217; minimum wage will increase monthly from R2,564.33 to <strong>R2,728.45<\/strong>; weekly from R591.81<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>to<strong> R629.68<\/strong>\u00a0and hourly from R12.32 to <strong>R13.11<\/strong>, the department said.<\/p>\n<p>The new boarding allowance \u2013 where an employer requires an employee sleep over at a place other than where the employee resides \u2013 will increase from R349.70 to\u00a0R372.08.<\/p>\n<p>According to a 2016 BusinessTech <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/110689\/how-much-money-taxi-drivers-really-make-in-south-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a><\/strong>, many taxi associations don&#8217;t strictly adhere to the minimum wage structure, with pay determined by various local taxi associations and their operational level, and also the routes drivers are on.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, some driver pay is determined by the takings of the taxi \u2013 between 25%-30% of the takings per week &#8211;
