{"id":212093,"date":"2017-11-22T08:14:51","date_gmt":"2017-11-22T06:14:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=212093"},"modified":"2017-11-22T08:14:51","modified_gmt":"2017-11-22T06:14:51","slug":"5-important-things-happening-in-south-africa-today-191","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/212093\/5-important-things-happening-in-south-africa-today-191\/","title":{"rendered":"5 important things happening in South Africa today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s what is happening in and affecting South Africa today:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Southern Africa &#8211; not just Zimbabwe &#8211; are celebrating the resignation of Zim president Robert Mugabe, who announced that he will be stepping down on Tuesday evening. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesslive.co.za\/bd\/world\/africa\/2017-11-22-end-of-an-era-as-mugabe-finally-goes\/\">It has been reported that Mugabe has already left the country, leaving behind a sense of hope for the nation.<\/a><\/strong> However, some uncertainty persists, with many leaders now calling for free and fair elections.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.moneyweb.co.za\/news\/south-africa\/eskom-lowers-tariff-application-slightly\/\">Eskom has lowered its tariff hike request from 19.9% to 18.9% for direct customers, and from\u00a027.5% to 26.9% for municipalities.<\/a><\/strong> The reason for the lowering of the request is because Eskom&#8217;s revenue requirement dropped by R7 billion. Nersa is expected to announced what increase has been granted on 7 December.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.za\/2017\/11\/21\/brian-molefe-i-was-not-involved-in-state-looting_a_23284977\/?utm_hp_ref=za-homepage\">Disgraced former Eskom CEO Brian Molefe insists he had nothing to do with any state looting, and denied knowing about Eskom&#8217;s contracts with Trillian<\/a><\/strong>. He did, however, admit that he had met with the Guptas several times and had known them for a long time. He denied going to a shebeen in Saxonwold, however.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.enca.com\/south-africa\/no-nuclear-deal-on-the-table-mahlobo\">Government continues to keep South Africans in the dark over its controversial nuclear energy build, with energy minister David Mahlobo dodging questions<\/a><\/strong> laid into him at a portfolio committee meeting.
