Telkom<\/a> CEO Nombulelo Moholi<\/a> said that she did not see the company increasing its investment in submarine cables over the next two to three years.<\/p>\n

Speaking at a 2012 SATNAC media event, Moholi said that Telkom had enough dormant capacity on its current cable systems \u2013 including SAT-3\/SAFE, WACS and EASSy \u2013 to meet the company\u2019s international bandwidth needs.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course there can be a data explosion which will mean that we have to relook our strategy,\u201d Moholi pointed out.<\/p>\n

The West Africa Cable System (WACS<\/a>) was launched on 11 May 2012, increasing South Africa\u2019s international bandwidth capacity by 5.12Tbps and providing the country with another submarine cable system on the West Coast of Africa.<\/p>\n

Many industry commentators share Moholi\u2019s view that the current submarine cable systems landing in South Africa should serve the country\u2019s international bandwidth needs for a few years to come.<\/p>\n
