{"id":212377,"date":"2017-11-23T07:43:01","date_gmt":"2017-11-23T05:43:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=212377"},"modified":"2017-11-23T07:43:01","modified_gmt":"2017-11-23T05:43:01","slug":"analysts-are-weakening-their-forecasts-for-the-rand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/banking\/212377\/analysts-are-weakening-their-forecasts-for-the-rand\/","title":{"rendered":"Analysts are weakening their forecasts for the rand"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"article-content\">\n<p>The rand\u2019s roller-coaster ride isn\u2019t over yet &#8211; but traders appear uncertain about whether it\u2019s heading up or down.<\/p>\n<p>The South African unit, which has swung from being the best- to the worst-performing major currency against the dollar this year amid political tension and a faltering economy, is set for more volatility, based on prices of options contracts.<\/p>\n<p>One-month dollar-rand implied volatility soared to the highest in two years on Wednesday as traders hedged for big moves either way in the run-up to the ruling African National Congress\u2019 leadership election in December.<\/p>\n<p>The premium of options to sell the rand over those to buy it &#8211; known as the risk reversal &#8211; has dipped, however, suggesting traders are taking some bearish bets off the table even as hedging remains skewed toward the currency weakening.<\/p>\n<p>Reports that deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa, seen as the market-friendly candidate, is leading the race to take over as ANC leader from President Jacob Zuma have buoyed the rand.<\/p>\n<p>A win for Ramaphosa would be \u201c hugely market-positive,\u201d while a victory for Zuma\u2019s ex-wife Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, the other main contender, would send the currency down, according to Societe Generale SA.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Rand1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-212381\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Rand1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Rand1.png 1200w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Rand1-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Rand1-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Rand1-1024x576.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The leadership contest &#8211; which culminates in an elective conference from 16 to 20 December &#8211; isn\u2019t the only risk in coming weeks. Investors are bracing for a possible downgrade of the government\u2019s local-currency rating to junk on Friday, when Moody\u2019s Investors Service and S&amp;P Global Ratings publish reviews.<\/p>\n<p>The companies assess South Africa\u2019s local debt at one level above junk, and a cut by either could lead to the nation\u2019s exclusion from Citigroup Inc\u2019s World Government Bond Index. That may cause as much as $14 billion of outflows, according to Bank of America Corp.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s all reducing the currency\u2019s attractiveness for carry traders, who borrow dollars to invest in higher-yielding assets. Adjusted for volatility, implied returns for the dollar-rand trade over the next month have fallen to the lowest in almost six years, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Rand2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-212383\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Rand2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Rand2.png 1200w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Rand2-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Rand2-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Rand2-1024x576.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Despite the potential for swings either way, analysts, like derivative traders, still see the rand depreciating. The median forecast for the exchange rate at the end of the first quarter next year has weakened to 14.28 per dollar, from 13.4 since September, according to a Bloomberg survey.<\/p>\n<p>That suggests the rand may drop another 2.1% by then, extending its loss since March to 13%.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Rand3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-212385\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Rand3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Rand3.png 1200w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Rand3-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Rand3-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Rand3-1024x576.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Foreign investors are already turning cold on South African bonds, data from the Johannesburg Stock Exchange show, with daily outflows over the past month averaging R214 million ($15 million).
