President Jacob Zuma has approved salary increases for government officials, following a pay freeze in 2017 which affected most layers of government this past year.<\/p>\n
For cabinet ministers, deputy ministers and members of parliament (MPs), this will mark the first salary increase in two years.<\/p>\n
In 2016 (and 2017), the salary for ministers was at R2.31 million per annum – with the Zuma-approved 4% increase, this will now be around R2.4 million.<\/p>\n
Likewise, for deputies, salaries will increase from R1.9 million to R1.98 million after the 4% hike.<\/p>\n
The 4% hike also applies to all judges and the provincial executive, who were also affected by the salary freeze. Their new salaries for 2018 are reflected as follows:<\/p>\n
Zuma approved 4.5% salary hikes for MPs, Kings and Queens and provincial leaders.<\/p>\n
Magistrates were granted a 5.5% increase, which would take salaries up from R835,000 in 2016\/17 to R880,925 in 2018.<\/p>\n
The president also saw a salary freeze in 2017 at R2.87 million.However, he does not sign off on his own salary, and any increase will need to be put before parliament in the new year.<\/p>\n
