MTN<\/a> Nigeria has confirmed that attacks have been made on some of its tower installations in Northern Nigeria.<\/p>\n

On Thursday (6 September) an association of mobile phone companies said that at least 24 towers had been attacked across Nigeria’s north.<\/p>\n

Sapa claimed that at least nine masts burned down in the northeastern city of Maiduguri with the coast of a tower with antennas, generators and transmission equipment, exceeding $1 million.<\/p>\n

MTN Nigeria corporate services executive, Akinwale Goodluck<\/a>, said in a statement that the attacks by unknown persons had caused service challenges in parts of the north as sensitive hub sites had also been affected.<\/p>\n

According to Sapa, army spokesman Sagir Musa blamed a radical Islamist sect known as Boko Haram. Earlier in the year, the militant group threatened to target phone companies for collaborating with authorities.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe confirm that, like all the other major telecommunication operators, some of MTN\u2019s installations in Northern Nigeria have been damaged by unknown persons. As far as we are aware, there were no fatalities as a result of these attacks and we are receiving full co-operation from the relevant government security agencies,\u201d Goodluck said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe attacks are unfortunate as the facilities built by MTN Nigeria, and indeed other telecommunication companies, are key to the ICT revolution in Nigeria and the accelerated socio-economic development of our nation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Goodluck said the company was already working to restore services as quickly as possible to minimize the impact to subscribers.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe seek the kind understanding of our esteemed customers in the affected areas in Northern Nigeria who may have experienced congestion or outright network failure. We are intensifying efforts to restore normal services as soon as possible,\u201d Goodluck said.<\/p>\n

A spokesperson further told BusinessTech that MTN information was still coming in concerning specifics and extent of the damage.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur main focus at this time is to ensure that full service is restored in the affected areas.\u201d<\/p>\n
