{"id":216637,"date":"2017-12-14T09:29:10","date_gmt":"2017-12-14T07:29:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=216637"},"modified":"2017-12-14T09:29:10","modified_gmt":"2017-12-14T07:29:10","slug":"rand-expected-to-explode-in-the-coming-weeks-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/216637\/rand-expected-to-explode-in-the-coming-weeks-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Rand expected to &#8220;explode&#8221; in the coming weeks: report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Traders invested in the rand\u00a0haven\u2019t been this nervous since the global financial crisis.<\/p>\n<p>According to a report by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloombergquint.com\/onweb\/2017\/12\/14\/traders-bracing-for-explosive-rand-moves-after-anc-election\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a><\/strong> the nerves are\u00a0based around the ANC&#8217;s national conference and the decision to elect a replacement for President Jacob Zuma on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Should current deputy-president Cyril Ramaphosa win, the rand is expected to\u00a0rally to below R13 per dollar &#8211; a level last seen in September, said Bloomberg citing\u00a0Rand Merchant Bank.<\/p>\n<p>In comparison,\u00a0victory for his main opponent &#8211; Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma &#8211; could see the currency test the record-weak levels it posted last year.<\/p>\n<div class=\"story__element__wrapper\" data-loader=\"storyElement\" data-story-content-id=\"b0929010-cdbe-46e3-8fde-b1c8f9ed698f\" data-story-version-id=\"729cf48b-22de-40ff-b88d-c7062c1e8f6e\" data-card-content-id=\"796b0789-4581-440c-a37f-265298036ec2\" data-card-version-id=\"1bd8ee6a-2fae-48b0-a8af-bec9532e45b5\" data-story-element-id=\"134fb358-0c30-43c6-b919-58bbe64385ed\" data-story-element-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\"story__element story__element__text\">\n<div class=\"story-element- \">\n<p>&#8220;Traders should brace for &#8216;explosive&#8217; moves after the weekend,&#8221; said\u00a0John Cairns, a currency strategist at RMB.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The rand\u2019s strength in recent weeks &#8211; it has gained 7.3%\u00a0 against the dollar in the past month &#8211; suggests investors are pricing in a Ramaphosa victory.
