{"id":217093,"date":"2017-12-19T08:13:50","date_gmt":"2017-12-19T06:13:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=217093"},"modified":"2017-12-20T07:26:13","modified_gmt":"2017-12-20T05:26:13","slug":"5-important-things-happening-in-south-africa-today-210","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/217093\/5-important-things-happening-in-south-africa-today-210\/","title":{"rendered":"5 important things happening in South Africa today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s what is happening in and affecting South Africa today:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The relief and celebration around the victory of Cyril Ramaphosa as the ANC&#8217;s new leader has also been met with trepidation, as<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesslive.co.za\/bd\/opinion\/columnists\/2017-12-19-carol-paton-different-leader-and-different-faces--but-same-top-six-split\/\"> at least three of the ANC&#8217;s new top 6 are &#8216;deeply compromised&#8217;, with at least two (Ace Magashule and Jessie Duarte) sure to be implicated in the wider state capture saga<\/a><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>With the ANC&#8217;s top 6 leadership fight wrapped up, eyes are now on the nominations for the National Executive Committee (NEC) which has been boosted by an additional 80 seats. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/city-press.news24.com\/Special-Report\/ANC_Conference\/anc-nec-a-mixed-bag-of-controversial-figures-zuma-casualties-20171218\">Current nominees are a mixed bag of Zuma allies and opponents, including the likes of Pravin Gordhan and Mcebisi Jonas.<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.moneyweb.co.za\/in-depth\/investigations\/nersa-induces-eskoms-rubicon-moment\/\">Nersa&#8217;s decision to reduce Eskom&#8217;s fee hike from almost 20% to just over 5% has wiped close to R30 billion of potential revenue from the power utility&#8217;s books.<\/a> <\/strong>Eskom&#8217;s financials are already in a precarious position, and this move is a significant blow. However, Nersa said that Eskom should stop wasting money, instead of hiking fees.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ewn.co.za\/2017\/12\/19\/sabc-expects-striking-workers-back-after-wage-deal-reached\">Striking workers at the SABC are expected back at work after an agreement was reached regarding pay increases.<\/a> <\/strong>Despite workers demanding a 10% increase, the Communication Workers Union agreed to a 4.8% back-dated increase.
