Deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa is likely to call for a special prosecution process on state capture in his first speech as ANC leader next week.<\/p>\n
While president Jacob Zuma, and others implicated in state capture have stalled a proper investigation as called for by former public protector Thuli Madonsela, Ramaphosa now wants to fast-track prosecutions based on evidence of corruption that is already available,\u00a0according to a report by the Sunday Times<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n The process will be independent of any commission of inquiry with the new team expected to commence work immediately.<\/p>\n The move follows a December High Court ruling in which Ramaphosa was assigned the power to appoint a national director of public prosecutions after invalidating Zuma’s appointment of Shaun Abrahams to the position.<\/p>\n It is also understood that the issue of Zuma’s recall has become a non-negotiable in the party, with new ANC deputy president, David Mabuza, said to have met with Zuma on Saturday to discuss possible resignation options.<\/p>\n However, it is unlikely that an announcement on his resignation will be made ahead of the ANC’s 106th anniversary celebrations next week, as earlier reported<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n “The deal is that Zuma must resign himself,” an insider said to the Sunday Times. “If he doesn’t he will be impeached, and he will hitchhike from Cape Town to Nkandla.”<\/p>\n
