{"id":218445,"date":"2018-01-09T11:17:21","date_gmt":"2018-01-09T09:17:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=218445"},"modified":"2018-01-09T12:47:31","modified_gmt":"2018-01-09T10:47:31","slug":"south-africans-could-sue-the-sabc-over-tv-licences-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/media\/218445\/south-africans-could-sue-the-sabc-over-tv-licences-report\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africans could sue the SABC over TV Licences: report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The SABC&#8217;s poor finances means it is unlikely to meet its financial obligations &#8211; and this will have a negative impact on people who have paid their television licence fees in advance.<\/p>\n<p>This is according to\u00a0Advocate Paul Hoffman SC, director of social rights group Accountability Now, who called for a class-action law suit against the SABC as he feels that\u00a0South Africans are entitled to take steps to protect their &#8220;investment&#8221; in the services of the SABC, reports <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fin24.com\/Tech\/News\/sabc-could-face-class-action-on-pre-paid-tv-licence-fees-20180108\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fin24<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Hoffman cited the SABC&#8217;s audited financial statements for the financial year ended March 31 2017, which recorded R40.854 million in &#8220;deferred income&#8221; (money received for goods or services which have not yet been delivered) in respect of TV licence fees received in advance.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The SABC will continue to be reliant on government guarantees for it to continue as a going concern. That is, the SABC is unable to sustain its operations from its own resources and is entirely reliant on state guaranteed funding,&#8221; Hoffman said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It seems the SABC, already illiquid as its board concedes, is additionally likely to become insolvent in the short term.
