{"id":219293,"date":"2018-01-15T07:54:16","date_gmt":"2018-01-15T05:54:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=219293"},"modified":"2018-01-15T07:54:16","modified_gmt":"2018-01-15T05:54:16","slug":"5-important-things-happening-in-south-africa-today-221","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/219293\/5-important-things-happening-in-south-africa-today-221\/","title":{"rendered":"5 important things happening in South Africa today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s what is happening in and affecting South Africa today:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>New ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa flexed his muscled this weekend at the party&#8217;s 106th birthday celebrations, indicating that things are quickly changing within the ruling party. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/af.reuters.com\/article\/africaTech\/idAFL8N1P90H7\">On the question of Jacob Zuma&#8217;s time as president, Ramaphosa said that the Zuma government is beholden to the ANC, and that his tenure in the top job will be addressed in time<\/a><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The presidency, meanwhile, has denied Friday reports that Zuma made demands that Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma be appointed deputy president, and take over as president if or when he stands down. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeslive.co.za\/politics\/2018-01-14-presidency-denies-claims-zuma-demanded-ndz-be-appointed-deputy-president-of-sa\/\">A spokesman for the president said that media reports misconstrued the meetings being held between the presidency and new ANC leadership.<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.moneyweb.co.za\/news\/south-africa\/review-of-nersa-tariff-decision-on-the-cards\/\">Eskom is reportedly waiting in the wings to challenge Nersa&#8217;s decision to only grant it a 5.23% tariff hike, after it put in a request for a 19.9% increase<\/a><\/strong>. According to MoneyWeb, Eskom is waiting for Nersa to provide it with its reasons for the low grant, and is seriously considering challenging it to get a better rate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesslive.co.za\/bd\/companies\/retail-and-consumer\/2018-01-15-hampm-not-sure-of-timeline-for-stores-after-racist-furore\/\">Swedish retailer H&amp;M has temporarily closed some of its stores in South Africa after the EFF stormed and trashed them over the weekend in the wake of a global &#8220;racist hoodie&#8221; scandal<\/a><\/strong>.
