{"id":21950,"date":"2012-09-12T10:58:18","date_gmt":"2012-09-12T08:58:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=21950"},"modified":"2012-09-12T13:11:50","modified_gmt":"2012-09-12T11:11:50","slug":"pule-welcomes-public-protector-probe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/21950\/pule-welcomes-public-protector-probe\/","title":{"rendered":"Pule welcomes Public Protector probe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Minister of Communications, <a title=\"Dina Pule\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2128-Dina-Pule\">Dina Pule<\/a>, said in a press statement today that she has not yet received notification from the Public Protector that her office is investigating a potential conflict of interest involving the Minister in relation to the hosting of the <a title=\"ICT Indaba\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/4596-ICT-Indaba\">ICT Indaba<\/a> in Cape Town during June 2012.<\/p>\n<p>However, Pule said that she welcomes the Public Protector\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n<p>The investigation was confirmed in a letter to shadow minister of communications, <a title=\"Marian Shinn\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/4592-Marian-Shinn\">Marian Shinn<\/a>, following numerous reports by the Sunday Times and the <a title=\"DA\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1696-DA-Democratic-Alliance\">DA<\/a> itself that money allocated to the ICT Indaba were handled \u201cimproperly\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>According to Pule, she has instructed her staff to cooperate fully with the Public Protector, as they have done when they were dealing with the Office of the Auditor General.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cCleared of wrongdoing\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On 3 August 2012 the Department of Communications (<a title=\"DoC\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2129-DoC-Department-of-Communications\">DoC<\/a>) released a statement saying that there was no wrongdoing on the part of the minister or the conference organisers.<\/p>\n<p>However, Shinn said that the statement from the DoC only added to the smokescreen that minister Pule tried to create to deflect attention on whether <a title=\"Phosane Mngqibisa\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/4594-Phosane-Mngqibisa\" data-bitly-type=\"bitly_hover_card\">Phosane Mngqibisa<\/a>, her alleged romantic interest, benefited improperly from the Indaba.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Department\u2019s statement goes to great lengths to emphasise the fact that the Auditor General\u2019s (AG\u2019s) investigation into the matter has cleared the minister of any wrongdoing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe scope of the AG\u2019s investigation, however, was limited to focus on the payment of R10 million from the Department of Communications to the ICT Indaba to ensure that due process was followed by the department,\u201d Shinn said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_58745\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-58745\" class=\"size-full wp-image-58745\" title=\"Dina Pule shoes\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Dina-Pule-shoes.jpg\" alt=\"Dina Pule shoes\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-58745\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dina Pule shoes<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Public protector probe<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the letter addressed to Shinn, public protector, <a title=\"Thuli Madonsela\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2621-Thuli-Madonsela\">Thuli Madonsela<\/a>, apologised for the delayed response to the DA\u2019s query, saying further that she will proceed with an investigation into the matter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs you may be aware, the Auditor General undertook to look into, and has indeed looked into, the matter,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has since come back to me through a meeting with him on 28\/07\/2012 and his office this morning.
