{"id":220203,"date":"2018-01-22T08:00:56","date_gmt":"2018-01-22T06:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=220203"},"modified":"2018-01-22T08:00:56","modified_gmt":"2018-01-22T06:00:56","slug":"a-look-at-the-new-mandela-r5-coin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/220203\/a-look-at-the-new-mandela-r5-coin\/","title":{"rendered":"A look at the new Mandela R5 coin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Friday, 19 January, finance minister Malusi Gigaba <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.za\/sites\/default\/files\/41391_gen10.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">assented<\/a> <\/strong>to the introduction of a new R5 coin for national circulation.<\/p>\n<p>The coin is aimed at celebrating the life of Nelson Mandela who would have celebrated his centenary on 18 July 2018.<\/p>\n<p>It features South Africa&#8217;s coat of arms on the obverse, replacing the Black Wildebeest (or Gnu). On the reverse is a portrait of Mandela alongside a latent image featuring the years 1918 and 2018.<\/p>\n<p>According to the attached documentation, the coin is legal tender as of 1 January 2018, and holds the same value as all other R5 coins.<\/p>\n<p>Although South Africa\u2019s first decimal coin series was released in 1961, no R5 coins were minted until 1994.
