{"id":22157,"date":"2012-09-14T13:22:14","date_gmt":"2012-09-14T11:22:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=22157"},"modified":"2012-09-14T14:24:47","modified_gmt":"2012-09-14T12:24:47","slug":"dfa-enters-mthatha-with-r10m-kitty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/internet\/22157\/dfa-enters-mthatha-with-r10m-kitty\/","title":{"rendered":"DFA enters Mthatha with R10m kitty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dark Fibre Africa (<a title=\"Dark Fibre Africa\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2025-DFA-Dark-Fibre-Africa\">DFA<\/a>) says it has already deployed over 6,500 kilometres of optic fibre across South Africa, and will now invest nearly R10-million in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape.<\/p>\n<p>The group says its optic fibre network is expanding to smaller cities and towns at a rapid pace, enabling Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to offer their services to new markets.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It will launch the Mthatha district into the digital age. More importantly, the socio economic benefits of fibre optic networks are vast, affordable broadband contributes to increased economic activity,&#8221;\u00a0DFA said.<\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s CEO, <a title=\"Gustav Smit\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2026-Gustav-Smit\">Gustav Smit<\/a> says DFA&#8217;s network is the fastest-growing open-access optical fibre infrastructure in the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are the carrier of carriers, providing infrastructure to three of the top four cellular providers;\u00a0 seven of the top eight Internet services providers; to one of the two fixed-line operators; the country\u2019s largest media conglomerates; educational institutions; open-access data centres; and to major metro municipalities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DFA\u2019s footprint extends nationally and links with the <a title=\"SEACOM\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1983-Seacom\">SEACOM<\/a>, <a title=\"EASSy\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1984-EASSy-Eastern-Africa-Submarine-Cable-System\">EASSy<\/a>, <a title=\"SAFE\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1982-SAFE-South-Africa-Far-East-cable\">SAFE<\/a>, and the <a title=\"SAT3\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1981-Sat-3-wasc\">SAT3<\/a> cables at Mtunzini in KwaZulu Natal; links to the WACS cable at Yzerfontein; and the SAT 3 cable at Melkbosstrand in the Western Cape.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSouth Africans simply don\u2019t know what 20Mbps or 100Mbps to the home means.
