{"id":22450,"date":"2012-09-19T11:21:46","date_gmt":"2012-09-19T09:21:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=22450"},"modified":"2012-09-19T15:36:09","modified_gmt":"2012-09-19T13:36:09","slug":"cpi-up-50-year-on-year-in-august","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/22450\/cpi-up-50-year-on-year-in-august\/","title":{"rendered":"CPI up 5,0% year-on-year in August"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Consumer prices rose 5.0% year on year in August from 4.9% year on year in July\u201a <a title=\"Statistics SA\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2812-Statistics-South-Africa\">Statistics SA<\/a> said on Wednesday (19 September 2012).<\/p>\n<p>The inflation rate was expected to have increased at 5.0%\u201a according to a survey of leading economists by <a title=\"I-Net Bridge\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/4980-I-Net-Bridge\">I-Net Bridge<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Forecasts among the eleven economists ranged from 4.9% to 5.1% year on year.<\/p>\n<p>The consumer price index (CPI) increased 0.2% month on month in August from the 0.3% month on month increase in July.<\/p>\n<p>The annual average consumer inflation rate was 5.0% in 2011 from 4.3% in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>The main driver of the annual rise in the CPI was housing and utilities which contributed 1.4 percentage points. Food and non-alcoholic beverages\u201a and transport\u201a each accounted for 0.8 percentage points of the increase.<\/p>\n<p>The food and non-alcoholic beverages index was unchanged between July and August\u201a and rose by an annual rate of 4.9%\u201a down from 5.3% in July.<\/p>\n<p>The housing and utilities index rose by 0.2% between July and August\u201a mainly due to a 0.5% increase in water tariffs. The annual rate quickened to 5.8% from 5.7% in July.<\/p>\n<p>The transport index rose by 0.6% between July and August\u201a mainly due to a 22 cents\/litre increase in the price of petrol.
