Next-generation mobile technologies provider, Qualcomm<\/a> South Africa anticipates the acceleration of 3G adoption \u201cin all its flavours\u201d across the region, with the erosion of device and access cost in 2012.<\/p>\n

However, James Munn<\/a>, VP business development at Qualcomm South Africa, expresses concern over the lack of education in people using \u00a0smarter devices and technologies.<\/p>\n

\u201cTechnology is running away from us with astonishing solutions which in most cases are already here, but so many of the potential users are simply not aware of them, namely mobile banking apps,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

With the mobile 3G penetration rate in South Africa believed to be at roughly 20%, and far less in the rest of Africa – Munn says cost of ownership and low-cost internet access devices will drive the sector in Africa in the near- to mid-future.<\/p>\n

He believes that LTE<\/a> and quad-core will gain global attention and focus in 2012; and for Africa, the attention will focus on increased data access through speed, cost and coverage.<\/p>\n

\u201cWithout a doubt we will see cool devices this year at more affordable prices,\u201d Munn said.<\/p>\n

Munn opines that, while perhaps South Africa is lacking in technological innovation, \u201cwhat\u2019s out there is not getting consumed due to lack of access, understanding or basic education.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
