{"id":22606,"date":"2012-09-20T14:03:07","date_gmt":"2012-09-20T12:03:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=22606"},"modified":"2012-09-20T14:03:07","modified_gmt":"2012-09-20T12:03:07","slug":"western-cape-broadband-plans-on-track","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/telecommunications\/22606\/western-cape-broadband-plans-on-track\/","title":{"rendered":"Western Cape broadband plans on track"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In February Western Cape Premier <a title=\"Helen Zille\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/407121-Helen-Zille\">Helen Zille<\/a> announced plans to connect every citizen in the Cape Town metropolitan area to high-speed broadband, and these plans are now taking shape with numerous projects on the go.<\/p>\n<p>The speed of rolling out the broadband networks in the Western Cape is hamstrung by government\u2019s tedious National Treasury Public Private Partnership (PPP) methodology and processes, but despite these challenges, the province is making good progress in rolling out high-speed Internet access.<\/p>\n<p>The full provincial project will consist of a long term project (which is an official Public Private Partnership) and a few short term projects.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Alan Winde\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/417450-Alan-Winde\">Alan Winde<\/a>, the Western Cape\u2019s minister for finance, economic development and tourism, told MyBroadband that they have already connected 8 government buildings to their network at speeds of up to 1Gbps.<\/p>\n<p>The province\u2019s wireless mesh network roll-out plans are also progressing well, with a feasibility study into this part of the project under way.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How you will be connected<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_60181\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadband\/60177-how-you-will-get-western-cape-broadband-services.html\/attachment\/alan-winde\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-60181\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60181\" class=\"size-full wp-image-60181\" title=\"Alan Winde\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Alan-Winde.jpg\" alt=\"Alan Winde\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-60181\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alan Winde<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Winde explained that the City of Cape Town will provide services directly to selected buildings in Cape Town through its metro fibre backbone.<\/p>\n<p>However, the situation will change according to the area and the network which will be used to provide services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen it comes to citizens and businesses, the services will be provided by service providers not government (which includes municipalities),\u201d explained Winde. \u201cThis is a core principle of the Western Cape broadband strategy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Winde explained that for current short term projects, the situation varies per project.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For the Provincial Wide Area Network &#8211; which is the largest, most costly and highest impact of the short term projects &#8211; the view is that service providers will provide services.
