{"id":228071,"date":"2018-02-27T10:40:26","date_gmt":"2018-02-27T08:40:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=228071"},"modified":"2018-02-27T10:40:26","modified_gmt":"2018-02-27T08:40:26","slug":"watch-motorist-caught-hiding-number-plates-to-dodge-e-tolls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/motoring\/228071\/watch-motorist-caught-hiding-number-plates-to-dodge-e-tolls\/","title":{"rendered":"Watch: motorist caught hiding number plates to dodge e-tolls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A video posted by Arrive Alive has gone viral, showing the lengths to which some Gauteng motorists will go, to avoid having their number plates being picked up by e-toll gantries.<\/p>\n<p>The video shows a driver playing &#8216;hide and seek&#8217; with e-toll cameras, as a black shutter covers their number plates as they head toward one of the gantries.<\/p>\n<p>As soon as the car is clear of the gantry (and the cameras), the cover retracts and the number plates become fully visible once again.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">When you play hide and seek with the camera at the e-toll gantry but forget that there are many other cameras along our roads&#8230; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/sHtVmkjQU8\">https:\/\/t.co\/sHtVmkjQU8<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/ArriveAlive?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#ArriveAlive<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/luqbnrNdqv\">pic.twitter.com\/luqbnrNdqv<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Arrive Alive (@_ArriveAlive) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/_ArriveAlive\/status\/968032029668528128?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 26, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Hiding number plates in this manner is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/media\/110069\/watch-motorist-pulled-over-for-disappearing-number-plates-in-sa\/\">nothing new<\/a><\/strong> in South Africa, and is one of several\u00a0ways to avoid them being picked up by a speed camera \u2013 other methods include reflective spray, laser jammers or flipped plates.<\/p>\n<p>However, South African law states that it is illegal to obscure a vehicle\u2019s number plate (with only temporary obstructions like bicycle racks allowed), and traffic officials have warned that using reflective spray or other measures could lead to charges of defeating the ends of justice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>End of e-tolls?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On Monday (26 February), Gauteng premier David Makhura conceded in his state of the province address that e-tolling around Johannesburg had\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/227935\/e-tolls-have-failed-anc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">failed.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Makhura said that the system was simply not working, and promised that he would approach newly elected president Cyril Ramaphosa to discuss solutions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all know that the e-tolls have added to the cost of living for many motorists and public transport users in Gauteng. The new dawn (leadership change) must also bring a solution to the protracted and unresolved problem of e-tolls,\u201d Makhura said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is loud and clear for all to see that e-tolls have not worked.
