Remgro announced on 21 September 2012 that Pieter Uys, former chief executive officer of Vodacom, will join the management team of the company on 1 April 2013. Uys will serve on Remgro\u2019s management board, joining CEO Jannie Durand\u2019s team.<\/p>\n
This is a new challenge for Uys who, up to now, has only worked in the telecommunications industry. Uys started his career at Telkom, and joined Vodacom in 1993 as a member of the initial engineering team.<\/p>\n
Uys served as Vodacom\u2019s chief operating officer and MD of Vodacom SA before his appointment as CEO in October 2008.<\/p>\n
Uys stepped down as Vodacom CEO in August 2012, but will remain at Vodacom until March 2013 to ensure a smooth handover to new CEO Shameel Joosub.<\/p>\n
Although Uys will move to a completely new industry, he should feel at home with some familiar faces at Remgro.<\/p>\n
Remgro CEO, Jannie Durand served on the Vodacom board with Uys through VenFin\u2019s investment in the mobile operator. Former Vodacom Chief Financial Officer, Leon Crouse is also at Remgro (as CFO) which will further help Uys to feel at home.<\/p>\n
In an interview with BusinessTech, Uys said that he is excited to join Remgro, highlighting that his telecommunications experience will not be lost at the company. Remgro has investments in a few telecoms companies, including SEACOM and Dark Fibre Africa (DFA).<\/p>\n
Uys said that he is looking forward to grow Remgro\u2019s current shareholder value, and also look for new opportunities which will add value to the company.<\/p>\n
Uys said that he loves the culture at Remgro, and the fact that the company is based in Stellenbosch is a bonus. Uys\u2019 daughter will move to Stellenbosch next year, and his son will start studying at the Stellenbosch University in 2014.<\/p>\n
