{"id":229305,"date":"2018-03-05T16:26:48","date_gmt":"2018-03-05T14:26:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=229305"},"modified":"2018-03-05T16:26:48","modified_gmt":"2018-03-05T14:26:48","slug":"a-look-at-the-new-r500-mandela-coin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wealth\/229305\/a-look-at-the-new-r500-mandela-coin\/","title":{"rendered":"A look at the new R500 Mandela coin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In what will have been one of his final acts as finance minister,\u00a0Malusi Gigaba <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.za\/sites\/default\/files\/41478_gen98.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">assented<\/a> <\/strong>to three new special edition coins featuring Nelson Mandela.<\/p>\n<p>The coins are aimed at honouring the life of the former president of the republic who would have celebrated his centenary on 18 July 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Each coin represents a different stage of Mandela&#8217;s life:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A R50 base metal alloy coin depicting him as a young man;<\/li>\n<li>A R50\u00a0sterling-silver coin depicting him at an older age (his presidential years);<\/li>\n<li>A R500\u00a024-carat gold coin depicting him in his later years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All three coins feature South Africa\u2019s coat of arms on the obverse, replacing the Black Wildebeest (or Gnu).<\/p>\n<p>No official pricing or release dates are available at this stage, however the coins have been declared official tender meaning they should be released shortly.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Mandela-special-edition.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-229317 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Mandela-special-edition.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"568\" height=\"861\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Mandela-special-edition.jpg 568w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Mandela-special-edition-198x300.jpg 198w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 568px) 100vw, 568px\" \/><\/a><strong>New R5 coin\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In January, former finance minister Malusi Gigaba also signed off on the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/220203\/a-look-at-the-new-mandela-r5-coin\/\">introduction<\/a> <\/strong>of a new R5 coin for national circulation based on the great man.<\/p>\n<p>It features South Africa\u2019s coat of arms on the obverse, replacing the Black Wildebeest (or Gnu).
