Ford Motor says it will build hybrid versions of all of its most popular vehicles by 2021 as part of a plan to surpass Toyota as the number one hybrid car maker.<\/p>\n

Jim Farley, president of global markets at Ford Motor said: “So the changes we\u2019re making now are dramatic\u200a\u2014\u200awe\u2019re replacing more than 75% of our lineup with smarter, more connected vehicles, and we intend to deliver these vehicles with improved speed and quality. At the same time, the average age of our vehicles will drop to just more than three years.”<\/p>\n

He said that listening to customer feedback, the group plans to deliver more trucks and SUVs onto its showrooms; “in fact, they\u2019ll be 86% of our volume”.<\/p>\n

“2019 will also see us bringing Ranger back to the midsize truck segment in North America, and a new F-Series Super Duty debut,” Farley said.<\/p>\n

The motoring company said it would add to its SUV lineup. “We\u2019re adding a lineup of true off-road SUVs that allow people to get out there and really use their vehicle for its intended purpose.<\/p>\n

“Not too spartan and not too menacing, our new SUVs are amazing\u200a\u2014\u200ainspired by the incredibly popular F-150 Raptor<\/a>, which, incidentally, outsold the entire Porsche car lineup in the US last year. Raptor is comfortable running at high speeds both off-road in the sand and on the road to your next destination.”<\/p>\n

He said that the company would start with an all-new small off-roader, “which will join our highly anticipated Bronco, a versatile vehicle with maximum all-terrain capability in 2020”.<\/p>\n

“We\u2019re also adding a new line of on-road SUV performance models, starting with our recently introduced new Edge ST. Next is an Explorer ST\u200a\u2014\u200aand there will be more,” the executive said.<\/p>\n

Farley said that the foundation for its new strategy is to bring hybrid powertrains to its most iconic nameplates and highest-volume vehicles.<\/p>\n

“For Mustang, we\u2019ll amp things up by delivering V8-like performance from a hybrid powertrain. A hybrid powertrain will also add capability for F-Series with more low-end pulling power, along with the added benefit of serving as a mobile generator.”<\/p>\n

“Ford\u2019s new hybrid system is both more efficient and less expensive than previous generations. Lower costs\u200a\u2014\u200aachieved through new technology\u200a\u2014\u200amean a lower cost of ownership for our customers and a better experience overall,” Farley said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy 2021, we expect to surpass Toyota to be number one in hybrids,” he told journalists.<\/p>\n

Ford has a strong presence in South Africa, particularly through its Ranger brand. Ford noted that its passenger car sales surged in February 2018 however, with its market share climbing to 12.2%.<\/p>\n
