{"id":234703,"date":"2018-03-30T09:48:50","date_gmt":"2018-03-30T07:48:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=234703"},"modified":"2018-03-30T09:47:55","modified_gmt":"2018-03-30T07:47:55","slug":"its-time-to-make-our-privacy-tools-easier-to-find-facebook","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/internet\/234703\/its-time-to-make-our-privacy-tools-easier-to-find-facebook\/","title":{"rendered":"It\u2019s time to make our privacy tools easier to find: Facebook"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Facebook has much work ahead to enforce its policies and help people understand how the social network operates and the choices they have over their data, says Erin Egan, VP and chief privacy officer, policy.<\/p>\n<p>The company has come under a huge amount of criticism following a data-harvesting scandal, which has led to the company helping users delete their information as part of an overhaul of its privacy settings.<\/p>\n<p>The scandal forced an apology from CEO, Mark Zuckerberg. &#8220;I&#8217;m really sorry that this happened,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We have a basic responsibility to protect people&#8217;s data. And if we can&#8217;t do that, we don&#8217;t deserve to have the opportunity to serve people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We\u2019ve heard loud and clear that privacy settings and other important tools are too hard to find and that we must do more to keep people informed,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.fb.com\/news\/2018\/03\/privacy-shortcuts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said\u00a0Egan<\/a> in a post on the company&#8217;s site.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So in addition to Mark Zuckerberg\u2019s announcements last week \u2013 cracking down on abuse of the Facebook platform, strengthening our policies, and making it easier for people to revoke apps\u2019 ability to use your data \u2013 we\u2019re taking additional steps in the coming weeks to put people more in control of their privacy. Most of these updates have been in the works for some time, but the events of the past several days underscore their importance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Making Data Settings and Tools Easier to Find<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Controls that are easier to find and use.<\/strong> &#8220;We\u2019ve redesigned our entire settings menu on mobile devices from top to bottom to make things easier to find. Instead of having settings spread across nearly 20 different screens, they\u2019re now accessible from a single place. The new Privacy Shortcuts is a menu where you can control your data in just a few taps, with clearer explanations of how our controls work. The experience is now clearer, more visual, and easy-to-find,&#8221; said\u00a0Egan.<\/p>\n<p>From here you can:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Make your account more secure:<\/strong> You can add more layers of protection to your account, like two-factor authentication. If you turn this on and someone tries to log into your account from a device we don\u2019t recognize, you\u2019ll be asked to confirm whether it was you.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Control your personal information:<\/strong> You can review what you\u2019ve shared and delete it if you want to.This includes posts you\u2019ve shared or reacted to, friend requests you\u2019ve sent, and things you\u2019ve searched for on Facebook.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Control the ads you see:<\/strong> You can manage the information we use to show you ads. So we\u2019re introducing Access Your Information \u2013 a secure way for people to access and manage their information, such as posts, reactions, comments, and things you\u2019ve searched for.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You can go here to delete anything from your timeline or profile that you no longer want on Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We\u2019re also making it easier to download the data you\u2019ve shared with Facebook \u2013 it\u2019s your data, after all. You can download a secure copy and even move it to another service. In the coming weeks, we\u2019ll be proposing updates to Facebook\u2019s terms of service that include our commitments to people. We\u2019ll also update our data policy to better spell out what data we collect and how we use it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These updates are about transparency \u2013 not about gaining new rights to collect, use, or share data.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We\u2019ve worked with regulators, legislators and privacy experts on these tools and updates.
