simply because these satisfy the majority of daily cash payments in the country.<\/p>\n<p>While novelties like the\u00a0Bank of England\u2019s 1 million and 100 million pound notes do exist, similar to collectors items, they are not considered legal tender and similar to other novelty coins are considered collector&#8217;s items.<\/p>\n<p>However there are some notable exceptions to this rule, the $10,000 US dollar note (effectively retired in the early 20th century), and the 1,000 Swiss franc note still considered legal tender.<\/p>\n<p>BusinessTech looked at the most valuable notes that are still considered legal tender in their country of origin.<\/p>\n<p><em>Currency valuations based on trading values at 09:00 SAST on 20 April 2018.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>$10,000 US dollar note<\/strong> &#8211; <em>approximately R119,910<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/dollar.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-239449\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/dollar.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"269\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/dollar.jpg 1837w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/dollar-300x126.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/dollar-768x323.jpg 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/dollar-1024x430.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/dollar-1200x504.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Large-denomination currency including $500,$1,000 and $2,000 dollar notes were widely used in the United States in the 18th and 19th century.<\/p>\n<p>Although they are still legal tender in the United States, high-denomination bills were last printed in 1945, and officially discontinued in 1969 by the\u00a0Federal Reserve\u00a0due to &#8216;lack of use&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>However the $10,000 effectively disappeared well before then.<\/p>\n<p>Despite this, the currency is still considered legal tender with just hundreds of the notes currently known &#8211; primarily in the care of collectors.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>10,000 Singapore dollars note &#8211; <\/b><em>approximately\u00a0R91,293<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Singapore-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-239453\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Singapore-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"314\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Singapore-2.png 1059w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Singapore-2-300x147.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Singapore-2-768x377.png 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Singapore-2-1024x503.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Despite a 2014 announcement that it would be discontinuing the 10,000 Singapore dollar note, it remains one of the most valuable notes still in active circulation.<\/p>\n<p>The Singaporean government said that the decision was made to cancel the issuing as\u00a0high value notes are popular with organised criminals as they are a lighter, and a more efficient way of carrying large amounts of cash.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>1,000 Swiss franc note &#8211; <\/strong><em>approximately R12,328<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/franc-note.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-239463\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/franc-note.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"262\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/franc-note.jpg 620w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/franc-note-300x123.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A point of some controversy,\u00a0Switzerland\u2019s government has <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2016\/feb\/16\/1000-swiss-franc-note-here-to-stay-swiss-national-bank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">continued<\/a> <\/strong>to issue the note despite European Union concerns that it was being used in payments by militants.<\/p>\n<p>The note is currently the highest denomination note available in the EU, and is often used as a store of value despite being considered legal tender.<\/p>\n<p>The CHF1,000 bill currently in use features the portrait of the Swiss historian Jacob Burckhardt on one side.
