{"id":243135,"date":"2018-05-08T12:51:22","date_gmt":"2018-05-08T10:51:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=243135"},"modified":"2018-05-08T12:51:22","modified_gmt":"2018-05-08T10:51:22","slug":"renters-are-under-pressure-and-living-beyond-their-means-even-those-who-earn-more-money","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/property\/243135\/renters-are-under-pressure-and-living-beyond-their-means-even-those-who-earn-more-money\/","title":{"rendered":"Renters are under pressure and living beyond their means &#8211; even those who earn more money"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The latest PayProp Rental Index shows that the average percentage of South African tenants\u2019 net income that they spend on rent increases disproportionally as their income increases.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our assumption is that people who earn more can afford higher rents, but this doesn\u2019t always seem to be the case,&#8221; says Johette Smuts from PayProp.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When we look at the change in debt-to-income ratios from Q4 2016 to Q4 2017, we see that these ratios increased for tenants who pay more than R10,000 rent.
