Rome2rio, a travel planning website, has published the 2018 edition of its Global Flight Price Ranking \u200bwhich highlights the cheapest airlines in the world for cost per kilometre.<\/p>\n

\u200b”Our data science team analysed economy-class airfares displayed by Rome2rio<\/a> <\/strong>over a two month period, totalling some 1.5 million price points, to provide a snapshot of global pricing (in $ per km) across international and domestic carriers,”\u00a0Rome2rio said.<\/p>\n

“We wanted to get a sense of the world\u2019s most affordable airlines, and the cheapest \u2013 and most expensive \u2013 countries to travel in right now.”<\/p>\n

Australia\u2019s Tiger Air is seen as the cheapest airline at a cost of $0.06\/km, “likely due to the large distances covered by the budget airline”.<\/p>\n

Tiger Air was bought by Virgin in 2014, “who seem to have turned its fortunes around,” Rome2rio said, after the airline had been voted the country’s worst for three years running.<\/p>\n

From an international perspective, when Rome2rio measured the top 200 airlines by average price ($) per kilometre on international flight searches, it found Asian and Indian carriers dominated the top of the list, with Air Asia X taking top spot, followed by Air India Express and Indonesia AirAsia.<\/p>\n

SAA was well down the list, taking 119th place, at a cost of $0.19\/km.<\/p>\n

For domestic flights, South African carriers fared much better, led by FlySafair, who along with Mango, featured among the top 30 airlines at a cost of $0.13\/km.<\/p>\n

Rome2rio stressed that its analysis “is intended to be a conversation starter, not a definitive statement on pricing trends or a given airline\u2019s place in any particular pecking order”.<\/p>\n

“The cost of a flight depends on many factors, including how close the booking is made to the time of travel and the popularity of the route,” it said.<\/p>\n
