Teraco has announced that the NAPAfrica Internet Exchange Point (IXP) is now ranked in the top 15 largest global IXPs.<\/p>\n
NAPAfrica is located within Teraco\u2019s vendor-neutral data centres in Johannesburg and Cape Town, and is the largest IXP in Africa.<\/p>\n
Global IXP rankings are determined in terms of unique ASNs or peering members across the IXP, and Teraco\u2019s Andrew Owens said NAPAfrica connects to over 350 ASNs servicing 16 countries.<\/p>\n
\u201cSeveral NAPAfrica members claim that as much as 80% of their traffic is peered at the exchange,\u201d said Owens.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis significantly lowers transport costs across the southern continent and enables clients to offer a better service at far more competitive prices.\u201d<\/p>\n
Teraco said that the development of infrastructure and the growth of the NAPAfrica IXP has allowed South Africa to benefit from improved Internet offerings.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn the eight years since the start of NAPAfrica, sub-Saharan Africa has benefited from local and international content from leading providers such as Akamai, Cloudflare, Facebook, Google, Netflix, Microsoft, and Amazon.\u201d<\/p>\n
Owens said NAPAfrica will continue to upgrade its infrastructure, as Internet traffic in Johannesburg and Cape Town continues to rise \u2013 reaching 400Gbps and almost 100Gbps respectively.<\/p>\n
