First National Bank (FNB<\/a>)\u00a0CEO\u00a0Michael Jordaan<\/a>\u00a0says that the bank is \u201cdabbling\u201d in near field communication (NFC) technology.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are dabbling in it (NFC),\u201d he told Businesstech at a function in Sandton, however he stressed that much of the change in the banks technology ecosystem would continue to centre on banking cards.<\/p>\n

FNB\u2019s eBucks CEO, Joland\u00e9 Duvenage<\/a>, pointed to careful strategy planning by the bank, saying that it did not want to take on new technology simply for the sake of it.<\/p>\n

Jordaan noted that, while a number of the latest smartphones on the market included NFC capabilities, the majority of phones used in South Africa were not NFC-enabled.<\/p>\n

The CEO did, however, confess that he was \u201cterrified\u201d of the competition in the banking industry, but added that he welcomed competition.<\/p>\n

Jordaan was being questioned over the possibility of another bank in the country launching a rival service to eBucks. \u201cWe would be terrified,\u201d he said, adding that anything other banks did \u201cthreatens us (FNB)\u201d. He said that players in the financial services industry watched each other \u201cwith an eagle eye\u201d.<\/p>\n

In December 2011, Absa launched South Africa\u2019s first live user trial of NFC technology on mobile phones. It involved 500 of the bank\u2019s own staff members, operating in a live commercial environment.<\/p>\n
