{"id":245827,"date":"2018-05-27T15:00:29","date_gmt":"2018-05-27T13:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=245827"},"modified":"2018-05-25T14:51:58","modified_gmt":"2018-05-25T12:51:58","slug":"south-africans-are-quickly-losing-trust-in-companies-like-facebook-and-google","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/internet\/245827\/south-africans-are-quickly-losing-trust-in-companies-like-facebook-and-google\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africans are quickly losing trust in companies like Facebook and Google"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ipsos has released the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipsos.com\/en\/internet-security-and-trust\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">results<\/a> <\/strong>of its latest Internet Security and Trust survey, showing how people around the world feel about internet privacy right now.<\/p>\n<p>The survey was conducted between 29 December 2017 and 5 March 2018, and polled 25,262 users from across 25 different countries. This includes over 1,000 South Africans who were weighted to match current demographics in the economy.<\/p>\n<p>The survey found that more than half (52%) of internet users around the world are more concerned about their online privacy than they were a year ago.<\/p>\n<p>Among those who are more concerned about their online privacy, three quarters (74%) say that internet companies contribute to that growing concern \u2013 second only to cyber criminals (81%) and ahead of other internet users (66%), one\u2019s own government (63%), companies in general (61%), foreign governments (58%) or employers (48%).<\/p>\n<p>Global internet users also express a high-level of distrust of social media platforms, search engines and internet technology companies with 63% of respondents claiming that social media has too much power.<\/p>\n<p>Those in emerging markets such as Nigeria (84%), Egypt (81%) and Kenya (79%) are most like likely to agree that social media has too much power, while residents of Russia (40%), Japan (47%) and Poland (49%) are less likely to say so.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>South Africa<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>South Africa is a stand-out when it comes to rising levels of distrust, particularly around internet companies.<\/p>\n<p>When asked to what extent government contributed to an increase in online privacy concerns over the last year, 34% of South African respondents said that it had contributed &#8216;a great deal&#8217;, while 30% felt that they &#8216;somewhat agree&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>This combined score of 64% placed South Africa 10th behind countries such as the United States (78%), Poland (65%) and Brazil (64%) when it came to governmental privacy concerns.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Ipsos-1-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-245831 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Ipsos-1-1-1024x779.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"639\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Ipsos-1-1-1024x779.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Ipsos-1-1-300x228.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Ipsos-1-1-768x584.jpg 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Ipsos-1-1.jpg 1037w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, South Africa was the highest ranked country when asked\u00a0to what extent internet companies contributed to an increase in online privacy concerns over the last year.<\/p>\n<p>48% of South African respondents said that it had contributed &#8216;a great deal&#8217;, while 36% felt that they &#8216;somewhat agree&#8217;
