{"id":250307,"date":"2018-06-07T17:39:10","date_gmt":"2018-06-07T15:39:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=250307"},"modified":"2018-06-07T17:39:10","modified_gmt":"2018-06-07T15:39:10","slug":"rand-hits-5-month-low-in-panic-sell-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/250307\/rand-hits-5-month-low-in-panic-sell-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Rand hits 5 month low in panic sell: report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The rand hit its lowest level in 5 months on Thursday afternoon (7 June), as sentiment toward the currency was soured by a combination of poor economic growth and investors fleeing emerging markets.<\/p>\n<p>The currency was\u00a02.04% weaker at R12.98 per dollar, at 16h00 local time, losing most of that ground as New York traders came online and offloaded their risk holdings as turbulence in other emerging markets and weak growth locally led to some feverish selling,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/af.reuters.com\/article\/southAfricaNews\/idAFL5N1T94EO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a> <\/strong>reported.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We\u2019ve seen some panic selling as the rand went past 12.85. A couple of stops were triggered and now its momentum trading. It\u2019s nothing to do with South Africa\u2019s fundamentals, it\u2019s a global EM sentiment thing,&#8221; said fixed-income specialist at Rand Merchant Bank Michelle Wohlberg.<\/p>\n<p>The fact that other Brazil\u2019s real sunk to a\u00a0new 2-year low alongside other poorly performing emerging markets also likely contributed towards the slip.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In this last move we\u2019ve seen a lot of aggressive offshore buyers. We are not sure if there\u2019s a large flow behind it. We\u2019ve also seen the Brazilian currency weakening significantly, and other EM\u2019s seem to be following suit,&#8221; said senior trader at Standard Bank Oliver Alwar.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The rand\u2019s still suffering from spillover effects from Tuesday\u2019s GDP numbers.
