here&#8217;s what they are driving"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Limpopo&#8217;s provincial government is fond of German car manufacturers.<\/p>\n<p>This is according to a recent Q&amp;A session, in which DA provincial leader Jacques Smalle posed questions about the cars purchased by the province&#8217;s various departments and Premier Stan Mathabatha\u2019s office, reports the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.news24.com\/SouthAfrica\/News\/benz-rules-in-limpopo-20180610-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">City Press.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Notably,\u00a0seven of the province\u2019s eleven top politicians appear to favour the Mercedes brand, with taxpayers money also spent on a\u00a0Jeep, a Lexus, a VW Touareg and a Range Rover.<\/p>\n<p>These vehicles also included a number of\u00a0extras such as metallic paint, sun roofs, tinted windows and maintenance plans &#8211; R740,848<\/li>\n<li>Mercedes-Benz ML 400 &#8211; R740,848<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Ministerial handbook<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The amount that South Africa&#8217;s politicians are allowed to spend on vehicles is currently regulated by a ministerial handbook.<\/p>\n<p>The handbook also provides for the amount of time\/mileage a politician has to drive a vehicle before being allowed to purchase a new one.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday (4 June), <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeslive.co.za\/politics\/2018-06-04-new-guidelines-for-cabinet-members-perks-to-be-handed-over-next-week\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TimesLive<\/a> <\/strong>reported that\u00a0Public service and administration minister Ayanda Dlodlo was expected to submit the final draft of a revised ministerial handbook to President Cyril Ramaphosa some in the next week.<\/p>\n<p>Government announced the review of the ministerial handbook in 2009 following public pressure after it emerged that ministers in the then Jacob Zuma administration had embarked on a shopping spree\u201a buying luxurious vehicles shortly after assuming office.<\/p>\n<p>While\u00a0Dlodlo did not say what perks she intended to cut, she acknowledged that the handbook was in need of reviewing and that her task-team was in the process of completing the report.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Read: <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/motoring\/250353\/mercedes-is-trialing-a-subscription-service-that-allows-you-to-swap-cars-as-often-as-you-like-for-r14300-a-month\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mercedes is trialing a subscription service that allows you to swap cars as often as you like for R14,300 a month<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Limpopo&#8217;s provincial government is fond of German car manufacturers &#8211;
