{"id":250707,"date":"2018-06-16T07:00:52","date_gmt":"2018-06-16T05:00:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=250707"},"modified":"2018-06-15T12:00:10","modified_gmt":"2018-06-15T10:00:10","slug":"how-much-it-costs-you-to-go-green-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/250707\/how-much-it-costs-you-to-go-green-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"How much it costs you to go &#8216;green&#8217; in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There has been a clear push from both the private and public sector towards a more sustainable South Africa in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p>This includes initiatives to cut down on plastics from major retailers such as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/250321\/pick-n-pay-announces-plans-to-ditch-wasteful-plastics-heres-what-is-changing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pick n Pay<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/249571\/woolworths-is-ditching-its-wasteful-plastic-packaging-heres-what-is-changing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Woolworths<\/a><\/strong>, while government officially gazetted its <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.za\/sites\/default\/files\/41689_gon580.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Climate Change Bill<\/a><\/strong> on Friday (8 June), alongside an <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/250523\/joburg-will-make-household-recycling-compulsory-from-1-july\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announcement<\/a> <\/strong>by the City of Johannesburg that it was looking to make recycling compulsory.<\/p>\n<p>It also makes financial sense for these groups to start becoming more &#8216;green conscious&#8217;, with a recent\u00a0Euromonitor International report finding that\u00a0the global market for health and wellness offerings reached $686 billion in 2016 and it is expected to grow to $815 billion by 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Among metropolitan South Africans there is a similar eco and health-conscious lifestyle trend, says\u00a0Priya Naicker, advice manager at Old Mutual Personal Finance.<\/p>\n<p>However she notes that\u00a0many still perceive efforts to save the earth as an expensive endeavour.<\/p>\n<p>According to Naicker, a\u00a0vegan meal at a restaurant\u00a0can cost approximately <strong>R95<\/strong>, while a bio-degradable straw at an eco-friendly restaurant costs at least <strong>R5<\/strong> compared to a free plastic straw. A reusable glass straw can cost upwards of <strong>R250<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>On a larger scale, an electric car will set you back at least <strong>R400,000<\/strong> in South Africa, compared to a regular passenger vehicle for under R130,000, she said.<\/p>\n<p>According to a recent <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/energy\/244765\/how-much-it-costs-to-move-the-average-home-in-south-africa-onto-solar-power-in-2018\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BusinessTech<\/a> <\/strong>report, you can also expect to pay upwards of <strong>R35,000<\/strong> to move your home to solar heating, while a\u00a0complete solar photo-voltaic (PV) system can cost <strong>R80,000<\/strong> and upwards.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It may also be difficult and expensive to access eco-friendly products. Finding cruelty-free cosmetics could cost you a 45-minute trip to an eco-friendly market or a few extra rands at an online store,&#8221;\u00a0she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yet a commitment to living a life that is environmentally friendly need not cost the earth.The ethos of eco-friendliness \u2013 using responsibly and saving more \u2013 is actually in sync with healthy financial habits,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Below Naicker outlined some\u00a0wallet-friendly ways to align your money with eco-conscious values:<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Get advice\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Your consumption values determine your spending habits and this makes them as important to your financial plan as your goals.<\/p>\n<p>Talk to your financial adviser about aligning your money with businesses and investments that are sustainable and ethical in terms of their Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) practices.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DIY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The global frugal community prides itself on the double gift of their lifestyle \u2013 taking care of the environment while saving money.<\/p>\n<p>By engaging in DIY projects from renovations or gardening to homemade lifestyle pieces, you can effectively reduce your carbon foot-print and save money.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Repurpose and reuse\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Reusing items is both eco-friendly and wallet-friendly.<\/p>\n<p>There are a host of helpful online resources to get you started on everything from repurposing your clothes, to making your own soap out of leftover soap slivers or creating a burger patties from juice pulp.<\/p>\n<p>The options are endless with a bit of creativity and the resolve to cut consumption. Plus, there is the added benefit of customised items\/<\/p>\n<p><strong>Recycle<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Recycling in South Africa is a profitable industry that provides income to thousands of people. Collect-a-Can, for example, recycles 66% of all beverage cans in South Africa, and provides income to 37,000 people. By recycling up your trash, you could earn extra income or help create jobs for others.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Earn rewards\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Eco-conscious living has many health benefits which could earn you rewards.
