Oracle Corp, the world\u2019s second-largest software company, projected profit in the current quarter that fell short of Wall Street\u2019s estimates, signaling it still may be struggling to pivot to the cloud.<\/p>\n
Shares declined more than 4% in extended trading.<\/p>\n
Adjusted earnings per share in the fiscal first quarter will be 67 cents to 69 cents, compared with analysts\u2019 projections of 72 cents a share.<\/p>\n
Revenue will increase 1% to 3% in constant currency, chief executive officer Safra Catz said on a conference call.<\/p>\n
Catz and chief executive officer Mark Hurd have expanded Oracle\u2019s cloud offerings in a bid to shore up sales.<\/p>\n
Over the past few months, the company has engaged in a charm offensive meant to woo new and old customers to convert to its products accessible via the internet and by subscription, instead of programs that clients hosted on their own servers.<\/p>\n
The steps have included beefing up service quality in its maintenance program and selling customers a so-called \u201cautomated\u2019\u2019 version of its flagship database program, arguing it will reduce clients\u2019 labor costs.<\/p>\n
The company also bolstered its sales team. But as Oracle follows Amazon.com Inc, Microsoft Corp and Salesforce.com Inc in offering web services hosted remotely, there\u2019s persistent concern that the company\u2019s progress hasn\u2019t moved fast enough.<\/p>\n
Cloud is a major initiative being undertaken by corporate chief information officers, said J. Derrick Wood, an analyst at Cowen & Co.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a top priority and it\u2019s where more budget is being spent. If you\u2019re not partaking in that cloud initiative, you\u2019re not partaking in where the growth in budget dollars are going,” Wood said, speaking in a phone interview before the earnings were released.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe quicker Oracle can get their customers to the cloud, the quicker they can start driving more growth and more wallet capture out of those customers.”<\/p>\n
Last year, Catz forecast double-digit adjusted earnings per share growth for fiscal 2018 and the company delivered an increase of 14%, \u201clargely driven by strong growth in our cloud businesses,\u201d she said in a statement Tuesday.<\/p>\n
While profit projections in the current period may fall short of estimates, Catz said in the statement that she expects the company will again deliver double-digit adjusted earnings per share growth in fiscal 2019.<\/p>\n
In the fiscal fourth quarter, profit excluding some items was 99 cents per share on sales of $11.25 billion, the Redwood City, California-based company said.<\/p>\n
Analysts had on average estimated 94 cents a share and revenue of $11.2 billion, according to data compiled by Bloomberg News.<\/p>\n
The shares, which oscillated after the results were released, fell as much as 4.8% to $44.03 in extended trading. In March, they fell the most in six years after the company forecast slowing sales in cloud-related products.<\/p>\n
Oracle changed the way it reports cloud revenue with these results and didn\u2019t break out sales of traditional on-premise software licenses as it had in the past. The company said cloud services and license support revenue, which accounts for 60% of the total, increased 8% to $6.8 billion.<\/p>\n
Cloud license and on-premise license revenue declined 5% to $2.5 billion.<\/p>\n
The change, \u201cwhich masks the performance of its cloud infrastructure and applications segments, overshadows higher-than-expected sales and adjusted EPS growth,\u201d Anurag Rana, a senior analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence, wrote after the earnings were released.<\/p>\n
Catz said the changes are intended to better describe Oracle\u2019s business since the introduction of its bring-your-own-license model. The model lets customers move their existing business to Oracle\u2019s cloud while they continue to pay support for the licenses, she said during the call.<\/p>\n
Based on Oracle\u2019s prior reporting structure, \u201ctotal cloud revenue\u201d was $1.7 billion for the period ended May 31, Catz said.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s about a 9% increase from the total cloud revenue Oracle reported in the previous quarter and a 25% increase from a year earlier.<\/p>\n
Some of Oracle\u2019s largest customers have now begun the process of moving their on-site databases to the cloud, said chairman and chief technology officer, Larry Ellison.<\/p>\n
“For example, AT&T is moving thousands of databases and tens of thousands of terabytes of data into the Oracle Cloud,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Oracle has likened its new database to a self-driving car, because it forgoes human administrators and has the ability to patch itself. The company has hoped lower labor costs might entice new and existing customers to adopt the technology.<\/p>\n
The company also invested in a new center in Austin, Texas, which will eventually house 10,000 employees – including many in sales. Oracle has recruited a new generation of sales staff from a litany of universities across the US.<\/p>\n
Oracle became one of Silicon Valley\u2019s most cash-rich technology companies because of its relational database \u2013 a technology that allows organizations to store and process data, such as retail transactions.<\/p>\n
Ellison said in March that rivals including Salesforce, SAP SE, Microsoft and Amazon are all Oracle customers, though some have reportedly taken steps to transition away from the company\u2019s products.<\/p>\n
