Standard Bank<\/a> has been ranked South Africa\u2019s \u201cgreenest\u201d company in the 2012 Newsweek Green Rankings.<\/p>\n

Standard Bank was ranked 21st globally in the Financial Sector category and 64th overall. Other South African companies included in the rankings were MTN<\/a>\u201a Bidvest<\/a> and Sasol<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Newsweek\u201a an international weekly news magazine\u201a publishes the Green Rankings annually\u201a focusing on the largest publicly traded companies in America (US 500 list) and worldwide (Global 500 list).<\/p>\n

Each list consists of the largest 500 companies by revenue\u201a market capitalisation\u201a and number of employees\u201a as at 30 June 2012.<\/p>\n

To produce the 2012 Green Rankings\u201a Newsweek collaborated with leading environmental research providers\u201a Trucost and Sustainalytics\u201a to assess each company’s environmental footprint\u201a management of that footprint\u201a and transparency<\/p>\n

Companies on each of the US 500 and Global 500 lists are ranked by their overall Green Score. This is derived from three component scores – Environmental Impact\u201a Environmental Management\u201a and Environmental Disclosure\u201a weighted at 45%\u201a 45%\u201a and 10% respectively.<\/p>\n

All scores are out of a possible 100. Standard Bank\u2019s overall score was 71.7\u201a with its Environmental Impact scoring 81.6 Environmental Management 58.7\u201a and Environmental Disclosure 86.4.<\/p>\n

More than 700 metrics – including emissions of nine key greenhouse gases\u201a water use\u201a solid waste disposal\u201a and emissions that contribute to acid rain and smog – are factored into the Environmental Impact Score<\/p>\n

The Environmental Management Score assesses how a company manages its environmental performance through policies\u201a programmes\u201a targets\u201a and certifications.<\/p>\n

The Environmental Disclosure Score evaluates the breadth and quality of company environmental reporting of their material impacts as well as company involvement in key transparency initiatives such as the Global Reporting Initiative and Carbon Disclosure Project.<\/p>\n

Karin Ireton<\/a>\u201a head of sustainability management at Standard Bank Group\u201a said the ranking was recognition of Standard Bank\u2019s approach to embedding sustainability thinking into the way it does business.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe believe business has an important role to play in greening our economy and we are at the forefront with innovations in financing of energy efficiency\u201a the roll out of solar water heaters and South Africa\u2019s renewable energy programme.”<\/p>\n

“We are also investing in the social capital of this country\u201a building the capabilities of our staff and partnering with others to address the need for agricultural financing and infrastructure in Africa.\u201d<\/p>\n
