{"id":254431,"date":"2018-06-27T07:29:31","date_gmt":"2018-06-27T05:29:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=254431"},"modified":"2018-06-27T07:29:31","modified_gmt":"2018-06-27T05:29:31","slug":"saa-set-to-rent-out-its-pilots-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/254431\/saa-set-to-rent-out-its-pilots-report\/","title":{"rendered":"SAA set to &#8216;rent&#8217; out its pilots: report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As part of his cost-cutting measures to help save the airline, South African Airways CEO Vuyani Jarana is looking at possibly leasing out the state company&#8217;s pilots and cabin crew to foreign airlines battling a global shortage of flight staff.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sg.news.yahoo.com\/rent-captain-africa-plugs-global-pilot-shortage-031918067.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AFP News<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0SAA spokesman Tlali Tlali said that\u00a0Jarana&#8217;s key objective is to protect SAA&#8217;s &#8220;employees and return to positive financial performance&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>This is because mass retrenchments would be unpopular with the flying public and the government, and the airline could\u00a0 also help major airlines avoid cancellations such as those that plagued Europe&#8217;s biggest airline Ryanair which had to cancel thousands of flights from November because of an admin error that led to pilot shortages.<\/p>\n<p>According to National Treasury director-general Dondo Mogajane,\u00a0SAA <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/243147\/treasury-willing-to-sell-part-of-saa-to-private-partner-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">requires\u00a0<\/a><\/strong>a R5 billion cash injection in the current financial year to help it meet its financial obligations.<\/p>\n<p>However, he warned that\u00a0the cash injection could not come from government as it has already pumped R20 billion into the state-owned enterprise.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, other avenues are being considered to help cover the shortfall, with Mogajane saying that the National Treasury IS willing to consider selling a stake in the airliner to a private equity partner.<\/p>\n<p>In May, Public Enterprises minister Pravin Gordhan announced that\u00a0 this would include the merger of SAA, SA Express and Mango &#8211; which he said\u00a0\u00a0all three currently fly to the same destinations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBringing the airlines together and rationalising their routes and important.
