{"id":257549,"date":"2018-07-15T07:00:20","date_gmt":"2018-07-15T05:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=257549"},"modified":"2018-07-13T14:55:50","modified_gmt":"2018-07-13T12:55:50","slug":"how-mauritius-became-the-richest-country-in-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wealth\/257549\/how-mauritius-became-the-richest-country-in-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"How Mauritius became the richest country in Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The island nation of Mauritius has set itself apart as the wealthiest country on the African continent on a per capita basis.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past 10 years (2007 to 2017) total wealth held in Mauritius has risen by 195% (in US$ terms), making it the fastest growing wealth market in Africa and one of the top 3 fastest growing worldwide over this period.<\/p>\n<p>Total wealth held in Mauritius now amounts to US$43 billion, while per capita wealth (average wealth per person) stands at US$33,000, making Mauritius the wealthiest country in Africa (on an average wealth per person basis).<\/p>\n<p>A new report by AfrAsia Bank and New World Wealth has put Mauritius in focus, looking at why the country has drawn such immense wealth to its shores.<\/p>\n<p>The sharp rise in Mauritius&#8217; wealth has been primary due to the country&#8217;s fundamentals &#8211; having a strong economic growth and a stable government &#8211; and also in its ability to draw wealthy individuals to do business and live there.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Best-performers.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-257565\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Best-performers.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"590\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Best-performers.png 640w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Best-performers-300x277.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The country has built up a solid financial sector, specialising in offshore banking, fund management and private banking. When combined with an appealing tax regime, secure ownership rights, and a relatively low barrier to gaining permanent residency, it&#8217;s no surprise over 4,600 high net worth individuals (people with a net worth over US$1 million) have made it &#8216;home&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>According to New World Wealth, these are the key draw factors for Mauritius:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Strong economic growth;<\/li>\n<li>A thriving and growing financial services sector;<\/li>\n<li>Well-developed banking system and stock exchange;<\/li>\n<li>Strong FDI inflows;<\/li>\n<li>Secure ownership rights &#8211; the most critical component of successful wealth creation globally;<\/li>\n<li>Low taxes &#8211; company and personal income tax rates are only 15%, with no inheritance or capital gains tax;<\/li>\n<li>Residents are free to invest overseas with no exchange controls;<\/li>\n<li>Low level of government regulation in the local business sector ;<\/li>\n<li>Automatic permanent residency if one buys a US$500,000+ home in the country;<\/li>\n<li>Ease of doing business in the country;<\/li>\n<li>Low jobless rate and low inflation rate;<\/li>\n<li>Developed, free media;<\/li>\n<li>Safety &#8211; deemed the safest country in Africa;<\/li>\n<li>Good schools;<\/li>\n<li>Rising commercial and residential property prices; and<\/li>\n<li>Access to first class food and produce.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>According to New World Wealth, Mauritius&#8217; policies are very similar to other thriving business destinations like Singapore &#8211; while its government intervention and ownership rights stand in contrast to places like South Africa and Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s location also makes it an attractive destination to feed further into Africa.<\/p>\n<p>A <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/194614\/investors-would-rather-put-their-money-in-mauritius-than-south-africa\/\">2017 study<\/a><\/strong> found that Mauritius was ranked as the most attractive destination in Africa for businesses and investors &#8211; \u00a0a position that South Africa once held above it.
