{"id":258451,"date":"2018-07-13T15:12:31","date_gmt":"2018-07-13T13:12:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=258451"},"modified":"2018-07-13T15:12:31","modified_gmt":"2018-07-13T13:12:31","slug":"reserve-bank-officially-launches-new-mandela-notes-coins-and-an-app","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/258451\/reserve-bank-officially-launches-new-mandela-notes-coins-and-an-app\/","title":{"rendered":"Reserve Bank officially launches new Mandela notes, coins and an app"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For the first time in the nearly 100-year history of the South African Reserve Bank (SARB), a series of commemorative banknotes is being issued.<\/p>\n<p>The launch will include a Mandela Day lecture by former US president Barack Obama next week.<\/p>\n<p>The South African Reserve Bank said the notes depict Mandela\u2019s life including his upbringing in rural Eastern Cape as the son of a chief, his 27-year incarceration and the end of apartheid in 1994 when he became president.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These banknotes, as well as a third commemorative R5 circulation coin, were officially launched today in honour of the birth centenary of South Africa\u2019s first democratically elected President, Nelson Mandela,&#8221; the SARB said in a statement on Friday (13 July).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A mobile app &#8211; as a platform to create greater public awareness of the security, technical and design features of banknotes &#8211; was also unveiled, and is now is available on both the Apple iStore and the Google<br \/>\nPlay Store.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It added that an extensive public awareness campaign under the banner #TheMadibaInMe is underway to support the launch of these banknotes and coin.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It acknowledges that Mandela\u2019s values live within all South Africans and encourages people to pass on the values of service and respect during the moment of money exchange,&#8221; the SARB said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Security features of the banknotes and coin<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Mandela-Coin-and-Rand.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-256593 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Mandela-Coin-and-Rand.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"707\" height=\"506\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Mandela-Coin-and-Rand.jpg 707w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Mandela-Coin-and-Rand-300x215.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 707px) 100vw, 707px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to the SARB, the\u00a0\u00a0banknotes and coin are among the most secure in the world.<\/p>\n<p>The security features embedded in South Africa&#8217;s banknotes and coin represent the most innovative advances in global design and technology, with several noticeable security features, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the ability to feel the raised lines on the front-bottom left and right-hand side of the banknote;<\/li>\n<li>two matching numbers on the back of the note;<\/li>\n<li>raised printing on Mandela\u2019s face on the front of the note;<\/li>\n<li>a series of \u2018little dots\u2019 on the front left and back right of the notes;<\/li>\n<li>the shiny security thread down the centre of the note that should change colour when viewing it from a different angle; and<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0a \u2018complete animal\u2019 on the bottom left of the note when holding it towards a light source.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;When it comes to the commemorative R5 circulation coin, the \u20181918\u2019 on the face of the coin should change to \u20182018\u2019 when viewing it at an angle,&#8221;
