{"id":25874,"date":"2012-11-06T01:29:26","date_gmt":"2012-11-05T23:29:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=25874"},"modified":"2012-11-06T09:43:44","modified_gmt":"2012-11-06T07:43:44","slug":"telkom-shareholder-pic-calls-for-stability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/telecommunications\/25874\/telkom-shareholder-pic-calls-for-stability\/","title":{"rendered":"Telkom shareholder PIC calls for stability"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>State-owned investment arm, Public Investment Corporation (<a title=\"PIC\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/3183-PIC-Public-Investment-Corporation\">PIC<\/a>), has called for stability at <a title=\"Telkom\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1637-Telkom\">Telkom<\/a> following the resignation of CEO <a title=\"Nombulelo Moholi\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1667-Nombulelo-Pinky-Moholi\">Nombulelo Moholi<\/a> on Monday (5 November).<\/p>\n<p>Shares in Telkom declined 56 cents or 3.08% to R17.64 on the JSE, with Telkom\u2019s share price down as much as 40% for the year, compounded by a cabinet block of a merger with Korea firm <a title=\"KT Corp\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1638-KT-Korea-Telecom-Corporation\">KT Corp<\/a>, and rumours of nationalisation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe PIC has noted the resignation of Telkom\u2019s CEO Nombulelo Pinky Moholi with regret as we would have liked to see some stability at the executive level,&#8221;\u00a0the group said in a statement to BusinessTech.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We acknowledge that Mrs Moholi had been around for a relatively short period of time and was faced with various inherited challenges, some of which will only be resolved once an appropriate strategy and correct structures are in place.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Government holds a 39.8% shareholding in\u00a0Telkom, with the PIC owning another 10.9%.<\/p>\n<p>The investment group said it was yet to establish the reasons for Moholi\u2019s resignation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, it is critical that we establish stability at the executive and board levels, as the entity has been losing value over an extended period of time.\u00a0 It is further important to turn the entity around as soon as possible, and we believe the starting point is sorting out governance issues,\u201d PIC said.<\/p>\n<p>Telkom\u2019s fate is still in the hands of cabinet after the Department of Communications handed over its proposed options for the group.<\/p>\n<p>Having blocked a deal between Telkom and Korea-based\u00a0KT Corp\u00a0in June, Cabinet asked communications minister, <a title=\"Dina Pule\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2128-Dina-Pule\">Dina Pule<\/a> to report back to it about all the options that were available for Telkom, in three months.<\/p>\n<p>That deadline passed at the end of August, before the\u00a0<a title=\"DoC\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2129-DoC-Department-of-Communications\">DoC<\/a>\u00a0said it had finally presented its list of options to cabinet in mid-September.<\/p>\n<p>Pule\u00a0issued out a statement following the conclusion of Telkom\u2019s AGM late last month.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;In the wake of the outcomes of the AGM, we are now focused on enhancing and protecting Telkom\u2019s share value whilst balancing that with the objectives of providing affordable connectivity to all South Africans.
