Businessman Michael Jordaan recently sat down with 702’s Bruce Whitfield for a series of podcasts focusing on great South African minds who are thinking differently and going against the norm.<\/p>\n
While Jordaan spoke about his upbringing in Pretoria and the Western Cape, one of the most interesting parts of the story dealt with his experience in applying for a job at\u00a0Rand Merchant Bank.<\/p>\n
Shortly after starting his\u00a0PhD thesis, Jordaan saw an advertisement for a Rand Merchant Bank (RMB) programme in the newspaper, which came in the form of a riddle.<\/p>\n
According to Jordaan the riddle was as follows:<\/p>\n
Archie and Ben were two professional golfers and keen rivals.<\/p>\n
One day during a game, they had each scored 30 when Ben hit a bad shot.<\/p>\n
Archie immediately added 10 to his own score. Archie then hit a good shot and he had won the game. Why?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Jordaan explained that the riddle’s answer was of course that the two golfers were actually playing a game of tennis.<\/p>\n
Following a rigorous interview process, Jordaan landed a job as a trainee at RMB’s ‘Class Of’ programme, allowing him to be exposed to various parts of merchant banking – as well as a challenging, dynamic, and innovative culture at the company.<\/p>\n
Within ten years he was\u00a0appointed CEO of First National Bank where he continued to make a name for himself as an innovative and creative thinker.<\/p>\n
