{"id":260049,"date":"2018-07-23T09:25:19","date_gmt":"2018-07-23T07:25:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=260049"},"modified":"2018-07-23T09:28:49","modified_gmt":"2018-07-23T07:28:49","slug":"south-africa-set-to-implement-stricter-gambling-laws","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/260049\/south-africa-set-to-implement-stricter-gambling-laws\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africa set to implement stricter gambling laws"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Minister of Trade and Industry, Rob Davies, officially tabled the\u00a0National Gambling Amendment\u00a0Bill\u00a0on Friday (20 July).<\/p>\n<p>The Amendment Bill &#8211; which has existed in various forms since 2016 &#8211; proposes several changes to South Africa&#8217;s main gambling legislation, including a number of changes to South Africa&#8217;s current gambling structures as well as a strengthening of current rules.<\/p>\n<p>According to the draft bill, which is currently available on the Department of Trade and Industry&#8217;s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.za\/sites\/default\/files\/41787_gon742.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a><\/strong>, some of the biggest changes include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Repositioning the National Gambling Board to be a National Gambling Regulator;<\/li>\n<li>Transferring the regulation of all bets on the national lottery, foreign lottery, lottery results and sports pools to a National Lotteries Commission;<\/li>\n<li>Prohibiting dog racing and bets on dog racing in South Africa;<\/li>\n<li>Strengthening the regulation of casinos, limited pay-out machines and bingo. This includes the regulation of\u00a0electronic forms of bingo, and the\u00a0maximum number of bingo licenses and machines that can be granted in South Africa;<\/li>\n<li>Restrictions on gambling premises and locations of automated tellers &#8211; including &#8216;seperate&#8217; and &#8216;hidden&#8217; entrances for gambling areas located inside general public places such as shopping malls, arcades, complexes or centres;<\/li>\n<li>Recognition of a self-regulating body in the horse racing industry;<\/li>\n<li>Providing for broad-based black economic empowerment in the gambling industry.
