{"id":261277,"date":"2018-07-26T16:05:38","date_gmt":"2018-07-26T14:05:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=261277"},"modified":"2018-07-26T16:05:38","modified_gmt":"2018-07-26T14:05:38","slug":"naspers-ceo-considers-listing-some-businesses-to-reduce-size","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/internet\/261277\/naspers-ceo-considers-listing-some-businesses-to-reduce-size\/","title":{"rendered":"Naspers CEO considers listing some businesses to reduce size"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"article-content\">\n<p>Naspers Ltd is considering the listing of certain parts of its sprawling global media and technology business outside South Africa as the continent\u2019s largest company by market value seeks to reduce its size.<\/p>\n<p>The company takes \u201cvery seriously\u201d the difference in value between its stake in Chinese internet giant Tencent Holdings Ltd and the firm as a whole, chief executive officer Bob Van Dijk said in an interview on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Naspers\u2019s weighting on Johannesburg\u2019s stock exchange of more than 19% is also too high and forces some investors to reduce their holdings, he added.<\/p>\n<p>That said, Naspers is committed to retaining a primary listing on the South African city\u2019s bourse, the CEO said in Johannesburg, where he was attending a summit of BRICS nations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe logical next step would be to list parts of the business to see of we can reduce the overall size,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are discussing with our board.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Naspers has for years ridden the back of an early-stage investment in Tencent that\u2019s paid off many times over.<\/p>\n<p>The company has since scoured the globe for opportunities to replicate that success, and has put cash into ventures ranging from online travel agents in India, food delivery in Brazil and education software in the US.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s still plenty of investment opportunities available, meaning Naspers isn\u2019t considering a buyback, Van Dijk said.<\/p>\n<p>The shares rose 0.4% to R3,321.77 as of 3:37 p.m. in Johannesburg, valuing the company at almost R1.5 trillion ($114 billion).<\/p>\n<p>Mobile-payment technology has been identified as a cornerstone of Naspers\u2019s investment strategy, Van Dijk said.
