{"id":26443,"date":"2012-11-18T23:23:45","date_gmt":"2012-11-18T21:23:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=26443"},"modified":"2012-11-18T23:25:11","modified_gmt":"2012-11-18T21:25:11","slug":"sms-revenue-decline-to-continue-vodacom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/mobile\/26443\/sms-revenue-decline-to-continue-vodacom\/","title":{"rendered":"SMS revenue decline to continue: Vodacom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Vodacom\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1639-Vodacom\">Vodacom<\/a> CEO\u00a0<a title=\"Shameel Joosub\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/4537-Shameel-Joosub\">Shameel Joosub<\/a> says that, while SMS revenue will continue to decline, it will do so at a slower rate than many mature markets in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Last Monday (12 November), Vodacom noted that SMS and MMS revenue suffered a decline for the first time, albeit marginally, by\u00a00.2% to R1.53 billion for the six months ended September 2012.<\/p>\n<p>According\u00a0to an <a title=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/64568-the-true-cost-of-an-sms.html\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/64568-the-true-cost-of-an-sms.html\">article<\/a> featured in My Broadband last week, industry experts estimate that the true cost for an SMS to mobile operators is between 2c and 5c, meaning that retail costs of up to 80c per SMS provide a great source of profit for\u00a0operators.<\/p>\n<p>Vodacom&#8217;s chief executive said that the group had managed to counter the decline in SMS revenue somewhat through an integrated price plan.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that the country was still under-penetrated in terms of SMS by as much as 57-58%, while in some European countries the decline in SMS revenue was as much as 20%.<\/p>\n<p>Joosub said\u00a0that the arrival of devices like BlackBerry, through its messenger service, had eaten away at the group\u2019s messaging revenue. Vodacom has 2.7 million customers using <a title=\"BlackBerry\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1752-BlackBerry\">BlackBerry<\/a> handsets.<\/p>\n<p>Looking ahead, the company lead said in a statement: &#8220;Governments and regulators are placing increasing emphasis on delivering ICT services for all to unlock growth potential.
