{"id":270825,"date":"2018-09-11T11:42:32","date_gmt":"2018-09-11T09:42:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=270825"},"modified":"2018-09-11T12:07:15","modified_gmt":"2018-09-11T10:07:15","slug":"snapchat-to-invest-r2-2-million-in-south-african-startup-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/technology\/270825\/snapchat-to-invest-r2-2-million-in-south-african-startup-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Snapchat to invest R2.2 million in South African startup: report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Snapchat has announced its<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yellowla.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> startup accelerator<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Yellow &#8211; will offer\u00a0$150,000 (R2.2 million) in funding and creativity-centric business education in exchange for an\u00a0equity stake in several hand-picked startups including one from South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>According to a report by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2018\/09\/10\/snapchat-yellow-accelerator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TechCrunch<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0nine companies will take up a three-month residency in one of Snap\u2019s buildings in California as part of the accelerator programme.<\/p>\n<p>The accelerator class ranges from augmented reality and journalism studios, to lifestyle brands around weddings and fashion, to aesthetic-focused marketplaces like ConBody that pairs you with a muscular ex-convict for workouts.<\/p>\n<p>One of these companies is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/hashtagourstories.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hashtag Our Stories<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; a Durban-based startup which aims to create\u00a0an international mobile journalism (MOJO) network, publishing vertical video stories on social media.<\/p>\n<p>According to the company&#8217;s website the network is &#8216;created by citizens, but curated by journalists&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Since September 2017, we\u2019ve empowered 200 citizen storytellers in over 40 countries to produce videos with their phones,&#8221; it stated.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We focus on constructive, solutions-based stories and provide more diverse news coverage.
