{"id":273099,"date":"2018-09-23T09:00:23","date_gmt":"2018-09-23T07:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=273099"},"modified":"2018-09-21T14:58:38","modified_gmt":"2018-09-21T12:58:38","slug":"big-jump-in-south-africans-looking-to-leave-the-country-these-are-the-people-buying-residency-elsewhere","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wealth\/273099\/big-jump-in-south-africans-looking-to-leave-the-country-these-are-the-people-buying-residency-elsewhere\/","title":{"rendered":"Big jump in South Africans looking to leave the country &#8211; these are the people buying residency elsewhere"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A growing number of South Africans are looking to buy their way into foreign citizenship or residency.<\/p>\n<p>This is according to global citizenship and residence advisory firm, Henley &amp; Partners, who indicated that there was a 229% increase in the number of applications during 2018 compared to 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fin24.com\/Economy\/sa-super-rich-looking-for-a-2nd-citizenship-in-europe-20180821-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fin24<\/a>, <\/strong>Henley &amp; Partners&#8217; Amanda Smit said that most of the firm&#8217;s South African clients are usually male &#8211; although the firm has had a growing number of female individuals also applying for these programmes in the last couple of years.<\/p>\n<p>She noted that each of these applicants have an average of one to three dependents.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our programmes are quite popular amongst parents wanting to give their children the best education in the world and also to ease of travel requirements,&#8221; Smit said.<\/p>\n<p>She added that most South Africans are looking to get their second citizenship in Malta &#8211; with Cyprus and Moldova also named as popular options.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;About 45% of the applicants are self-employed, 45% employed and 10% non-economically active.
