{"id":273565,"date":"2018-09-26T14:14:49","date_gmt":"2018-09-26T12:14:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=273565"},"modified":"2018-09-26T14:14:49","modified_gmt":"2018-09-26T12:14:49","slug":"capitecs-new-business-bank-offering-and-other-developments-to-look-out-for","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/banking\/273565\/capitecs-new-business-bank-offering-and-other-developments-to-look-out-for\/","title":{"rendered":"Capitec&#8217;s new business bank offering &#8211; and other developments to look out for"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Capitec has published its <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/banking\/273523\/capitec-sees-massive-boost-in-profit-as-it-hits-10-5-million-customers-in-sa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">financial results<\/a><\/strong> for the six months ending August 2018 &#8211; showing both strong revenue, and client growth.<\/p>\n<p>With the bank now attracting\u00a0109,000 additional active clients every month, Capitec confirmed plans\u00a0to expand its product offering to include business banking.<\/p>\n<p>It said that this may include the acquisition of Mercantile Bank Holdings Limited \u2013 for which it submitted a formal bid on 31 August 2018, and is currently awaiting the outcome.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to BusinessTech, Capitec CEO Gerrie Fourie said that it is not that often that a business bank enters the local market.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We believe that we understand South Africa, so we will be<strong> focusing on SMEs<\/strong>,&#8221; Fourie said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So if we are successful\u00a0 &#8211; as you know there are four bidders &#8211; we will probably spend the first\u00a0year\/18 months going through different strategies to optimise and discuss the products that are needed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The goal is to see if we can do the same thing business banking as we did to retail banking in South Africa,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Additional bidders include Nedbank and two consortiums \u2014 the Public Investment Corp (PIC) and microlender and microinsurer Bayport Financial Services, and Grindrod Bank and Arise.<\/p>\n<p>Fourie added that Capitec has done its due diligence and is waiting for a decision to be made on who the successful bidder will be.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If it&#8217;s not us then we will build,&#8221; Fourie said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You are quicker to market (if the\u00a0bid for Mercantile\u00a0is approved) because you have an established business, while if you build you have to build for two or three years and only then can you got to market.
