{"id":274387,"date":"2018-09-30T07:57:26","date_gmt":"2018-09-30T05:57:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=274387"},"modified":"2018-09-30T07:57:26","modified_gmt":"2018-09-30T05:57:26","slug":"cabinet-ministers-to-pay-just-r1200-a-month-to-live-in-new-luxury-cape-town-apartments-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/274387\/cabinet-ministers-to-pay-just-r1200-a-month-to-live-in-new-luxury-cape-town-apartments-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Cabinet ministers to pay just R1,200 a month to live in new luxury Cape Town apartments: report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cabinet ministers will pay just R1,200 a month to live in lavishly renovated multi-million-rand apartments in Cape Town &#8211; labelled as a slap in the face for taxpayers.<\/p>\n<p>According to a report by the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeslive.co.za\/sunday-times\/news\/2018-09-29-swanky-cape-pads-for-ministers-at-r1200-rent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sunday Times<\/a><\/strong>, the 29 flats recently underwent a R100 million, two year-long renovation &#8211; at an average cost of R3.6 million each.<\/p>\n<p>The flats will house ministers, their deputies and senior officials.<\/p>\n<p>The report noted that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ministers who earn R200,000 a month will pay R1,200.82 to rent an apartment;<\/li>\n<li>Deputy ministers earning R165,000 will be charged R988.90;<\/li>\n<li>Directors-general will pay just R75.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Speaking to the Sunday Times, property analyst Erwin Rode said the department had &#8216;overcapitalised&#8217; on the renovations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That\u2019s a lot of money, unless you want to install gold-plated toilet seats and gold taps,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You don\u2019t use that kind of money unless you are the Queen of England. Prima facie, it looks wasteful.
