Naspers<\/a> CEO Koos Bekker<\/a> says that competition to its digital television offering, DStv<\/a>,\u00a0will come from the Internet rather than other satellite providers like TopTV<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Bekker said in a Moneyweb interview that \u201ca few years ago we thought competition [to DStv] will come in the form of other satellite providers and conventional TV, but it is actually coming from the Internet\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the time, frankly, for launching a new satellite-based TV service is probably over. I can\u2019t think of any successful satellite Pay-TV service launched in the last ten years anywhere in the world. The launches are all coming from the Internet,\u201d Bekker said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t fear another conventional old style TV service,\u201d he added. \u201cWhat we fear is some sort of Netflix<\/a> that sits out in the States and they offer what we offer on the Internet.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Naspers CEO added that MWEB<\/a> has become a strategic asset for the group in the pay-TV market because of the growing importance of the Internet as a movie and TV series delivery medium.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe now start studying how we can bring TV products to your home more elegantly, cleaner, faster and MWEB\u2019s got some expertise we can use,\u201d Bekker said.<\/p>\n
