{"id":275185,"date":"2018-10-06T08:20:22","date_gmt":"2018-10-06T06:20:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=275185"},"modified":"2018-10-06T08:30:20","modified_gmt":"2018-10-06T06:30:20","slug":"this-south-african-painting-could-fetch-r12-million-at-auction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wealth\/275185\/this-south-african-painting-could-fetch-r12-million-at-auction\/","title":{"rendered":"This South African painting could fetch R12 million at auction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A floral still life by Irma Stern is the highlight of Strauss &amp; Co\u2019s crop of offerings at its forthcoming spring sale in Cape Town on 15 October, and could fetch up to R12 million.<\/p>\n<p>Painted in 1947, Dahlias is a peak-period Stern depicting a favoured flower and additionally claims an impeccable provenance.<\/p>\n<p>Originally owned by renowned art collectors Ben and Cecilia Jaffe, Stern\u2019s brilliantly coloured oil was acquired by noted Cape Town collector Count Luccio Labia in 1994 at a sale handled by auctioneer Stephan Welz, who in 2009 helped establish Strauss &amp; Co.<\/p>\n<p>Part of a consignment of 22 paintings from the Labia Family Collection, Dahlias exhibits Stern\u2019s masterful brushwork and authoritative handling of paint.<\/p>\n<p>Dahlias were a recurrent subject in Stern\u2019s paintings from the 1930s and 1940s. The artist produced five such still lifes featuring these cut flowers, of which this painting is the fifth.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Irma-Stern.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-275187\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Irma-Stern.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"670\" height=\"763\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Irma-Stern.png 670w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Irma-Stern-263x300.png 263w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 670px) 100vw, 670px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The catalogue in the October sale includes 20 works in various media from the Peter and Regina Strack Collection, notably three rare oils by Adolph Jentsch.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from the Stern, other notable works released from the Labia Family Collection include an important landscape painting from 1918 by Pieter Wenning. The Yellow House: Bishopscourt in Winter (estimate R500 000 \u2013 700 000).<\/p>\n<p>British modernist Ivon Hitchens\u2019s Felled Trees (estimate R500 000 \u2013 700 000) was painted in 1946 and originates from the same period as a work held in the Tate Collection.<\/p>\n<p>Also on auction are Stern\u2019s Castle, Madeira (estimate R2 \u2013 R3 million) dates from 1963 and depicts the Fort of S\u00e3o Jo\u00e3o Baptista do Pico with a tropical palette of warm ochres, yellows, pinks and red, off-set against a lively sea of emerald green tones.<\/p>\n<p>An earlier portrait from 1949, Woman with Orange Headscarf (estimate R250 000 \u2013 350 000) also forms part of the release.
