{"id":276499,"date":"2018-10-14T16:00:28","date_gmt":"2018-10-14T14:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=276499"},"modified":"2018-10-12T16:01:15","modified_gmt":"2018-10-12T14:01:15","slug":"south-africa-is-at-the-bottom-of-the-ladder-when-it-comes-to-policy-credibility-economist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/276499\/south-africa-is-at-the-bottom-of-the-ladder-when-it-comes-to-policy-credibility-economist\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africa is at the bottom of the ladder when it comes to policy credibility: economist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa appears to be unwilling to implement meaningful economic policies.<\/p>\n<p>This is according to Lutfey Siddiqi, visiting professor-in-practice at the London School of Economics (LSE), who was speaking in an interview with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/10\/10\/turkey-south-africa-struggling-to-impose-credible-economic-policies.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CNBC<\/a> <\/strong>this week.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;South Africa, together with Turkey are at the bottom of the ladder when it comes to policy credibility,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I remember in December 2015, they had three finance ministers over a span over four days &#8211; so while we welcome the appointment of a new finance minister, credibility is not built in a day and that is something that they (South Africa) needs to be mindful of.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Central Bank communication, transparency and policy direction are at this stage of the cycle a lot more important than all the economic factors that affect emerging markets.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Credibility will be built based on action, not just on rhetoric,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Siddiqi argued that even though a country like Indonesia was in more a precarious economic position than many other emerging markets, its central bank&#8217;s response &#8216;feels like it&#8217;s part of a plan&#8217; to improve the situation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Whereas in the case of South Africa \u2014 or Turkey certainly \u2014 it feels like (they are) kicking and screaming and dragging in change.
