{"id":276779,"date":"2018-10-11T13:44:06","date_gmt":"2018-10-11T11:44:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=276779"},"modified":"2018-10-11T13:44:06","modified_gmt":"2018-10-11T11:44:06","slug":"heres-how-south-african-salary-increases-are-set-to-be-hit-over-the-next-12-months","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/276779\/heres-how-south-african-salary-increases-are-set-to-be-hit-over-the-next-12-months\/","title":{"rendered":"Here&#8217;s how South African salary increases are set to be hit over the next 12 months"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The technical recession continues to loom large over South Africa&#8217;s economic landscape and remains a talking point among CEOs, CFOs and HR directors.<\/p>\n<p>This is according to a new quarterly HR report published by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwc.co.za\/en\/assets\/pdf\/hr-quarterly\/hr-quaterly-september-2018.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PwC<\/a> <\/strong>which notes that while\u00a0profits are plunging, share prices continue to be under pressure and of course shareholders want a higher return on their investment.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, employees are continuously faced with increases in living costs, while taking home less pay.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The contraction of manufacturing output, retail sales, infrastructure expenditure and the downturn in new vehicle sales sketches quite a grim picture,&#8221; said PwC.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The anticipated average increases to be awarded in the next rolling 12- month period will be slightly above CPI (CPI is 5.1% in the third quarter) with the average of 6.1% on a total guaranteed package basis across industry sectors.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is indicative that organisations are continuing to be conservative in their approach as they shy away from the double-digit increases.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Below PwC set out the minimum and maximum expected total package increments for the next twelve month period &#8211; as of October 2018.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bt_table\">\n<div class=\"table-responsive\"><table class=\"table\" width=\"100%\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"6\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th style=\"text-align: center;\" bgcolor=\"#CCCCCC\" width=\"33%\">Employee category<\/th>\n<th style=\"text-align: center;\" bgcolor=\"#CCCCCC\" width=\"33%\">Minimum<\/th>\n<th style=\"text-align: center;\" bgcolor=\"#CCCCCC\" width=\"33%\">Maximum<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Executives<\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\">4.0%<\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\">8.0%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Management<\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\">4.0%<\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\">7.0%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>General staff<\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\">4.0%<\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\">7.0%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Unionised staff<\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\">6.0%<\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\">7.5%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Total lift to payroll<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>4.0%<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>8.0%<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Transparency<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to a recent <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/275813\/south-african-businesses-may-soon-have-to-disclose-the-gap-between-their-highest-and-lowest-paid-workers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BusinessDay<\/a> <\/strong>report, South African businesses may soon have to disclose the gap between its highest and lowest paid worker, and the difference in pay between men and women.<\/p>\n<p>This follows an agreement reached by Business Unity SA (BUSA) who said that companies would be encouraged to voluntarily disclose pay differentials, with a view to making these commitments compulsory within 12 months.<\/p>\n<p>These details will be disclosed in company financial statements, and follow similar international regulations which are aimed at creating fairness in the workplace.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa has often been named as the most &#8216;unequal country&#8217; in the world, so these changes will likely shine a light on how great the disparity is between a company&#8217;s top and bottom earners.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0latest findings from\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/264827\/how-much-south-african-bosses-get-paid-for-reaching-short-term-goals\/\">PwC\u2019s 10th edition of the Executive directors: Practices and remuneration trends<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0report, showed that the average CEO of a JSE listed company in the upper levels is<strong> R8.75 million<\/strong>. However, this can jump to as high as R25 million among the biggest listed companies.<\/p>\n<p>In comparison,\u00a0average monthly earnings paid to employees in the formal non-agricultural sector decreased from R20,060 in November 2017 to\u00a0R19,858\u00a0in February 2018 according to Stats SA.
